New saw Husky 555 or 562XP
« on: July 19, 2018, 01:49:07 pm »
I need to replace my Husky 357XP (bought used years ago, and is now giving up the ghost).

I was considering a 555 or 562XP. The extra $100 for the 562XP doesn't bother me so much, but I'm not sure I'd get anything out of it. I'm not all that excited about "rev boost" nor the extra weight (in fact, not nuts that both of these saws are heavier than the 357XP they will replace (at least according to the specs).

I know that the 562XP has gone through some revisions since it was released. Is this true of the 555 as well? Are there things I should be looking for when buying? I've heard the 562XP had some changes to address hot starting issues. I guess I should insist that the software is updated to the latest revision. Anything else to look for?

@Holmentree mentioned the Stihl 462 in another forum. That looks interesting: a 70cc saw that weighs less than a 60cc saw. I don't really need a 70cc saw, but if it weighs less than the 60cc alternatives I'm looking at, I guess I'd consider it.  Is there any word if/when it will be available in the US?  They do have me wondering how they cut so much weight out of a 70cc saw.

462 is here in threads. Also the 572.

Think the 462 is in 13lb range, but not sure. It is in the thread here.  http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/stihl/new-ms462/

Here is the actual weights of 562 555 357  http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/chain-saw-weights/

From heaviest to lightest shown in pics below.

If you like the regular carbs.

Might look at a type 2 version of the 362. Look for this clutch cover.
Lighter weight then all of them. Comes with regular carb or m-tronic.

Heavier look at the echo 620 or makita dolmar 6100

Those weights are a relief. I had always heard the 357XP spec weight was "optimistic" on Husky's part.

Have the heat issues been worked out on the 562XP - I heard there was a change to the cover to allow better ventilation. What should I look for to make sure I'm not getting the older design? Was this also an issue of the 555?

I had considered the Stihl 362, but tentatively ruled it out. However, I can't remember why now. What changed from the type 1 to the type 2?

I'm not sure I can wait for the Stihl MS 462. Especially with no firm word on US availability.

I had always thought Dolmars were a good value, but there are no good dealers anywhere near me. If I were better at servicing them myself, that might not be much of an issue, but I can't do enough of it myself to buy from a brand with no support in my area.

Weight is an issue for me, since I tend to suffer from "Weekend Warrior Syndrome" (I don't cut much at all for an extended time, then go at it intensively). The more weight I carry, the more likely I am to aggravate an old college wrestling injury, resulting in a couple of trips to the chiropractor. Using good body mechanics helps, but sometimes my old bad habits return.

Mitch has a 359 FS on my chainsaw repair group. = Clean Husky 359 up for grabs. Disassembled, cleaned, manifold updated and carb is kitted. Dual port muffler otherwise saw is completely stock.

He is here too.  $250 shipped I think it said.

T1 to T2 most of it changed from the looks of them.

I'm leaning toward the Husqvarna 555. I can use my old bars, and it's available now. The 555 that the local dealer has in stock is serial # 2017 34xxxxx, so that would put the manufacturing date in late August of last year. Does anyone know if there were significant changes between now and current production? (Other than software updates).

I had though about waiting for the Stihl 462 to become available - I'd have to abandon the bars from my 357XP, but that extra power for not much extra weight (about 3/4 lbs) is tempting. However, I'm not doing this professionally, and it's rare that I'm in big enough wood to really need that extra power. Plus, there is the question of when it will finally be available in the US.

The 562XP is still a possibility. I could probably sell my old bars to a friend with a 555.

Update:  New saw purchase was put off. as noted in my Diagnose problem with 357XP thread, I was able to get the 357XP repaired.

Since the 357XP is running reliably now, I'm going to wait and see how the Stihl 462 works out for folks when it hits the US. It may be that I go with that, rather than a 60cc saw when the 357 eventually dies.

Thanks for all the help & advice, folks!

I just had a guy offering a 359 on a trade with low psi.  Normally I would take it in. But he wanted to much on trade for one of my saws.
