Newbie's first post - Model 51 leaking bar oil
« on: May 18, 2012, 07:23:02 pm »
What did we all do before the internet and forums?

When I opened the box to use my model 51, I found a half cup or so of bar oil which had leaked from it. This had occurred over the month or so since previous usage. I took off the bar, cleaned and dried that area of the saw real well and looked for a cause. Nothing obvious. I was unwilling to try to take the clutch assembly off.  It somehow reminded me of other things I've taken apart and regretted it. Parts diagrams I found on line didn't give me an idea what might be the problem.

I filled the bar oil reservoir about halfway and sat the saw on a shop rag, bar side down, couple hours later found some seeped=out oil in the grove where the bar tension adjuster screw rests. Other areas were still dry. I ran a pievce of heavy fishing line into the vent tue and it went all the way in without hanging up.

So, a couple of questions. First the obvious one, anyone have an idea of the cause and the fix?  A second, more general one, how does the oiler work, how does the oil get from the reservoir to where it's suppoed to oil?

Thanks,

Frank

Welcome to the site. The Husky 51 oiler has a drive gear and a pump assembly. Your saying the oil is not leaking out of the oiler hole but somewhere else? I would set the saw on its base and watch for the seepage. I have had saws that would leak oil when stored. Some times just by unscrewing the oil fill cap to release the pressure will fix it.

Ron, the leak is so slow, I can't tell where it's coming from, but you've given me an idea.  I'll plug the weep hole with a bit of nylon and see if the leak stops.

One thing I'm curious about that maybe you can shed some light on.  I assume the bar oil is meant to lubricate the slot in which the chain slides, but I don't see right off how the oil gets from the hole to the slot.

There should be a hole in the bar that matches the oiler hole in your saw. Then the hole in the bar should be tunneled to the chain slot. If you cant see the hole it may be plugged.

Yeah, I see.  Thanks. Looking at the parts diagram again, I'm thinking it may be the oiler seal. How swould I  do I take off the centripetal clutch to get access to the plate to remove to get to the oil pump?

In chainsaws with a gear driven oil pump, it is usually located behind the clutch.

I usually take the spark plug out, find a small rope to feed into the spark plug hole.(As a piston stop). Put as much of the rope as you can in the cylinder. Then take a socket and ratchet and remove the clutch. The clutch is left handed threads so you will need to go clock wise to remove it.

Make sure piston has cleared ports upwards before feeding in rope. That way you dont feed into a port and  :o
