Argghh!

My metric socket the right size won't fit between the spark plug and the head. Do I need a metric spark plug socket or a thin wall socket?

The spark plugs are 3/4"

After I googled to see what it was, I found it in the "stuff I don't know where it came from, but might need it someday" drawer.

Got the clutch and the oil pump cover off and looked around. Lotta oil-sawdust crud, I guess to be expected in a nearly 20 year old machine.

What caught my eye was crud inside the cover at the perimeter and crud on the corresponding part of the saw body. I put the plate on a flat surface, and it looked deformed to me. The entire end of the plate toward the handle did not touch the glass. If the cover and body are supposed to mate and act as a seal, oil would definitely leak there.

Also, the hole in the seal (where I presume oil oil leaves the pump) was full of crud. Otherwise the seal looked good.

Replace the plate?

It appeared to me the oil pump pressure fits to the body, but it didn't come off easily, so I didn't push it. Anyway, at this stage, I don't see a clear need to remove it, I bet those things are highly reliable.  Your advice?

Might have gotten it fixed. I bent the oil cover plate slighly so the edge is flat all around against a pane of glass & reassembled the saw. it has been sitting clutch side down on a sheet of paper towel for a couple of hours now and no apparent leak.

Maybe I got it back together right, no parts left over!!!  :D

Glad to hear it Frank. It is tough to diagnose chainsaw problems from a computer sometimes.  :)
