Odd clutch cover, brake on a 254
« on: February 24, 2014, 02:30:29 pm »
The Husky 254 that I bought for parts or fixing looks a bit abused and may be a mongrel.  The clutch cover and  brake is not 254.  Everything looks like it lines up,  but the brake band is shredded so I can't properly check.   I've tried identifying what saw this is off.  May be 257/262/261 ?   The aluminum cover has #503 70 42 and the plastic inside cover has #503 70 43.

Is this a legitimate alternative to a 254/154 cover,  brake?  Initially I thought aluminum made it a better part,  but in the hard knocks of life plastic just deflects momentarily.

Then I assume the 254 used the same cover, at the time the 261 was made. They changed from plastic to magnesium on that model family some time around 1996/97, before any 261s were made.

The IPLs for the 254 doesn't show the bar pad that is on the inside of the cover though, while they do for the other models in the family.

I also assume the metal is magnesium, and not the aluminum mentioned in the first post.

Saw Troll ..."...The IPLs for the 254 doesn't show the bar pad that is on the inside of the cover though, while they do for the other models in the family.....

Me calling that aluminum is just unfamiliarity (inexperience).  How do I test that?  slice off a sliver and carefully set it on fire? (laughing)

My parts drawing from the 154/254 manual shows a clutch cover that looks just like the one on my 154.  Plastic body and has a screw hole pattern for the inner cover like the drawing.  The clutch cover from my 254 (pics above in my original post) has a different screw pattern on the inner cover.  That and the part numbers made me wonder if it had been added to the saw later,  or if maybe back then it was a functional option on the original saw.

Cheers,
Gregg.

There were several changes made during the production of the 254, so they are not all the same.
It would be interesting to know when your saw was made, to tell which cover was the original. Post the serial number, if you don't know how to decode it.

A picture of the starter side would also be of interest.

Agree 261.  Me too.

I'm pretty sure that is correct.  Can see em mentally can't remember #s either.  I could look it up but why.  261, 262 covers will work fine on 254 metal or plastic.

Shep, I can't remember, do the 254 cases have the slots for the plastic cover?

Nope.  According to my IPL's 1998 up don't have the tab.  1985 154,1986-88 254 PN: 501-8740-02/04/06 RB: 503-7470-71/73  (tab) 1998 up PN 503-7470-73 (no tab).  257-261 Metal PN: 503-7470-72.
3 types: 154 w/metal hand guard, 254 w tab on rear, 254 no tab.

 .....

Or 262xp or 257, from after some time in 1996 or 1997 (don't remember exactly when, but there quite recently was a thread somewhere, where it was pinned down more exactly).   ;)
