SawTroll.."..It would be interesting to know when your saw was made, to tell which cover was the original. Post the serial number, if you don't know how to decode it.....
A picture of the starter side would also be of interest..."

The serial number on the badge,  or am I looking for a stamped one on the casing?
The badge just above the oil filler has 7240176.  I tried learning how to read that number.  No real success sofar.  1997,  week 24?
Here are side views of that 254.  It does have slots for the plastic tabs on a clutch cover,  which fits with Farmboy's data if this 254 is pre 1998.

My 154 has on it's badge...1984,  007947.  It has a plastic cover with tabs,  so is perhaps an early 254 cover.

Can anyone tell me how to include quotes the normal way?  On my own I have not figured it out yet.

Thanks.

Right number, good thinking - but still 10 years off. The saw was made 1987 week 24.

A 1997 saw would say 1997 as well on the tag, and the starter side of the saw would be quite different.

One way is to press "quote" on the post you want to quote. The quote will then show up in your text window.

SawTroll..."The saw was made 1987 week 24".

Well hopefully this improves the chances that parts are usefull.

Quoting.  OK I'm getting it.  Open my reply window first,  then all the possible posts to quote show below that,  with an add quote button.  And I can add or remove (paste or cut) quotes within quotes...

Not exactly what I meant - but that works too! ;D

You don't have to press "reply" first, you can go directly to the post you want to quote, and press "quote". Then a "quick reply" text window opens, with your quote already there.

What you describe is how I anticipated it would work.  It's how it works on some other forums.  But if I try I don't get a reply window,  I get what looks like a text window,  one line deep,  that I can't write into,  and there are no toolbars above it or options below it.  My PC is Win XP with Explorer 8,  so maybe that's contributing.

Works fine for me just like Gregg says it is supposed to work.

Press REPLY
drop down and select post to quote
Quoted text appears in the editor window all formatted and everything
I add my comment to the bottom and press POST

Yes, it works fine, as long as you want to quote a post that is on the last page or so.

Press "preview" if you want a larger text window with the toolbars and options.  ;)

This post was done that way.
