Once spry 281 Husq, spitting fuel.
« on: June 03, 2014, 07:16:26 pm »
Hey guys,

Been awhile.

281 Husqy.

Think I blew a main gasket.

Have carb off, when pulling on cord, chain rotates, worse... it is spitting fuel out of the impulse hole,.... goner?

OH BOY, could be a million things. So, there is no carb on the saw and it is spitting fuel out the impulse?

It just means there is fuel sitting in the crankcase.   Give it some time and it will dry out.
Get a good carb on it and a good gasket and see what it will do.

If the chain rotates when trying to start it then you could have a broken spring on the clutch or one that is stretched real bad.

Yes, took the carb off to check gaskets.

First, though.

After a good hard run of carving, an hour or so, the saw started to miss a bit, got hard to start.

After letting it cool down, popping the gas cap, in case of an air lock, checking for venting problems, checking the obvious, I put it away.

Next day, pulled on it, noticed fuel mist coming out around the nylon spacer, the gasket areas, figured one of them blew.

Made a new one, although the one removed didn't look compromised.

Put it back together, pulled and no mist, figured I was gaining on it, but no start-up.

Set it aside and after a few hours the air filter holder attached to the carb, bowl was full of gas and seeping more.
Plug was soaked, too.

So knew there was a leak, but where?

Yesterday took the carb off, to check the two gaskets, the thin rubber one and the new one, against the cylinder, just put in... looked okay.

Pulled on it a few times looking in at the piston, and the impulse hole was shooting out gas.
Now I knew why the bowl was filling up... buy why?

The piston look goods, at least on the thrush side, compression is good, and figured the chain was turning because the cylinder was ''washed down'' with all that gas in there.

But yes the clutch spring could be weak or busted, just didn't get around to getting the bar off  yet to look.

Blew a bar tip the day before she started acting up with a nasty kick back, my 21 inch bar ruined, and she took a hard, hard knock then.

Got a used 16 inch bar and new chain, clutch spiders and spring looked decent when sticking those on, but just after that long carving session, she started acting up, which brings us back to the start of the story... .

Now this is me, yelling.

What actually happened, did the saw fall to the ground?

No Red, was cutting at an awkward angle and the bar tip caught the kick zone, blew the bearings out of the tip... shoved me back some and I am a pretty chunky guy to get to move.

Out with daylight to see, took the metering side off and lo and behold the tangs on the lever are gone, the needle was popped out like a frikkin' Jack In The Box.

"WHAT THE FU........... DGE"!

Don't even know where the pieces are.

A first for me... this terrible thing, probably have to buy a whole kit to get another lever.

Well that explains the fuel seep.

L'ard be praised 'Dougal !!

Well, Eliott  :'( that sort of explains it! Now the next challenge is to figure out where the broken metal went. OBTW here you can get kits cheap! As long as it is apart you might as well rebuild the carb.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Tim, I cranked the 'jack in the box' down with a lever out of my 165 rx clearing saw.

Gotta put a kit in that one anyway.

Yep, that place has some good prices.

For us Can'aliens though the 'space' shipping makes it about what I'd pay down at the local saw'slop.
