racing hot saw trouble
« on: January 24, 2013, 12:57:19 pm »
Hello,  I've always been a fan of the modified chainsaws or hot saws.  So when I was looking at one I noticed they run a longer spark plug and a two piece cylinder.  Can someone maybe explain why this is done?  Thanks

I always just ran Bosch 5E in everything Cliff Helsel 3120 Hotsaw, Dave Neiger 084 Hotsaw.  Now my MVP166 Marcel Vincent Hotsaw came with longer plug but I changed it to the cooler plug I liked.

Might just be old school thinking, I havent a clue.

I know they have went to the even shorter newer plugs found in chainsaws now days.  ;)

Just my guesses on 2 piece head for changing combustion chamber size and or locations. Plus compression. Side benefit is ease of porting.

You can see the long plug in this MVP166 (20 year old racesaw when I got it). When I got it I put the shorter Bosch 5E in.

Shorter plug in

Conventional thinking is that by placing the source of igntion directing in the center of the cylinder theoretically in the highest portion of the compression is the best place for it .For example most modern automobile engines use this method which actually goes back decades .
