Unable to start 266
« on: January 14, 2012, 09:41:38 pm »
I inheirited a 266 in fairly good shape. Replaced gas line and filter, carb kit, set high and low to 1 1/4 out. I have good spark in plug, but will not fire.

While you are working on it replace the crank seals.  The clutch side is in the OP easy to change.  Flywheel side easy also, replace o-ring in the seal housing too.

What kind of compression? I had saws that felt good by feel pop pop pop, but didnt start either and had a partial stuck ring for just a 1/8" or less.

Use a gauge and pull over till reading stops. 120 or better  I hope you see.

Also pull muffler and take a look at piston and rings.

I had a 670 Jred do me that way too.  Finally did comp. check it was if I remember about 90.  It was scored around the corner next to ex. port and I couldn't see it through the ex. port.

ive gotten 4 266 models, all blown up when given to me, why did all them have scoring on side of exhaust port, i know the one was a bad gas in cold weather that popped it.  what causes this type of scoring?

Can't say for certain without the p/c in front of me. Alot can be told from the intake skirt side too. If your talking cold weather, could be lean seizure from carb icing up causing the lean condition, snow injestion also. The saws probably didn't have the proper winter kits setup on them.
