Slow day in the shop soooooooo I have been thinking
« on: December 12, 2013, 02:28:27 pm »
I have a reasonable Husqvarna 261 as the base for a project. What I was toying with was using the piston for a 365SP (48mm) in a 261 instead of a 262XP (48mm) piston. The 262 piston is windowed and the 365 is not. The idea would be to raise complession without doing a bunch of machining.

262XP piston
Compression height pin center to top 21.0mm
Overall height 41.5mm

365SP piston
Compression height pin center to top 22.5mm
Overall height 42.5mm

Not sure if any of this will work, just throwing it out there to see what everyone thinks might be gained if anything.

I done basically same thing in a 475 poulan that used a windowed piston.  I put a BB372 piston in it and runs grrrrrrrreat.   ;) ;D

Way I looked at it the 365 SP and 372 P's were made for closed port cylinders.

I put pin to pin and then check after checking book specs on pistons.

With you guys with lathes mills etc you dont have to worry so much about this part.  You can cut and fix as needed.

I believe that both the 261 and 262 cylinders were closed port but used a windowed piston. So, the 365 piston may work out well.

I have had similar results to yours using
Stihl 028s pistons in Husqvarna 55s
&
Stihl 064 pistons in Husqvarna 372XP BB kits.

As soon as I get the piston in I will post pics of the process.

Also have a nice 257 46mm bore and was just noodling about how a Stihl 028S 46mm domed piston might work in that.

Had a dolmar 166 that MVP had built and HAD to run the OEM 166 piston backwards in it.

So guys dont get ripped by the folks on ebay selling dolmar 166 rings for $40.  Just use husqvarna 394 rings.  ;)

028S in 257, I don't believe will work because the stihl is too short (38.5 vs 41.5) in overall height, afraid it will freeport.

And if I ran the 1mm base gasket that Spike60 was talking about in another thread the squish should come out right at or near .020.
