Suggestions for 394xp rebuild
« on: December 25, 2017, 12:02:10 pm »
I have a 394xp that was run without oil in gas.  I have no money in it and i think everything is there except a bar and chain. I have not removed cylinder to take a look so it’s possible i may be able to re ring and clean up cylinder because the saw was almost new when this happened. Not sure how old the saw is but it’s been under a bench for several years.  My question is since i can’t find cylinder unless i go with 395 and the mod then what are my options.  Gluing the port onto top of carb just doesn’t appeal to me especially on a chainsaw.   I would be perfectly happy with stock saw.  I cut wood for firewood only but would really like to get it going again.  I’ve read it is a beast   I would probably replace crankshaft seals fuel lines and anything else you want to suggest.  I appreciate any information on quality parts and would certainly be interested in any parts for sale that you think i may need.  Thanks

The saw is froze. Can't pull rope at all and with muffler off i can see side of piston has a scar on it.  How hard will it be to get the jug off ?  Any suggestions.    Saw cosmetically looks great    From experience what do you think cylinder will look like   I don't have time this evening to play with but maybe in a few days

Pour atf into plug hole. Warm it up good and let it seep. 2 days if that and it should break the rings free. If that doesn't work then you might have to pump the top end full of grease by making a fitting on the spark plug.

Mdavlee that worked.  ATF Didn’t take 2 days 😍.   Pulled this evening and it’s loose.  I bet it doesn’t have any compression but at least i can get jug off now.   Tomorrow eve i will see if i can get it off and post some pics of inside cylinder.   I’m not sure what is missing but seems whatever the air filter sits in and goes onto intake is missing.  Maybe some type of tray that sits on the round intake tube. Anybody know what this piece looks like or what it’s called and where it can be had ?   Thanks

I will post a couple more if i can get closer pics.   I would like to know what the black spacer plastic piece is in sitting in orange pic   It’s brittle and needs replacing    What should i use or how should i begin to clean inside of cylinder   I have a cylinder hone for drill but that may be bad idea if what i feel is aluminum

Is fugly a word or have some of you fellas seen worse ?   I’m going to remove piston from rod.  With new piston does it matter which way you turn it.  Is there an arrow for front or anything ?
