Tell me about the Husky 257
« on: September 09, 2012, 10:28:09 am »
I was gineb one a guy couldn't get running.  Some fresh gas & tinkering (and LOTS of pulls) & now it's running pretty good.
Anything special about these saws as far as maintainance, etc?  Any simple mods worth doing for a dependable firewood saw?
Seems to be a decent performer.

257's are great firewood saws IMO. About the easiest mod for more hp you can do to one is bolt on a 262 P&C.

I second that!  Good power to weight.  A Pro saw.  In small wood it will cut real close to 262.  Bigger wood is where the extra cc's will show up.

Thanks guys.
Confirms what I thought.  Feels like a nice saw, & I think I'll enjoy playing with it. Just wondered if there were any quick & easy muffler mods etc worth doing.  No way it's getting a new P&C till it needs one.  Besides, locally a "big" tree would be 24" on the butt.  Mostly it'ssmaller spruce & birch.  I moved up here in '88 after spending over 10 yrs in the timber industry in the area I grew up in (Klamath Falls, OR.).  I worked from cemtral Oregon to as far south as Trukee Calif & worked in some REALLY nice timber.  When I moved up here my first thought was "These poor folks have no real trees!!!".
I have a lot of wood to cut this fall & the 257 & my new to me 026 will get a good workout.  I'm sure I will have a favorite by the time I'm done. If the Husky was as clean as the Stihl I'd probably already know the answer...

It was a cheaper and lower performance alternative to the 254xp and 262xp, but still a good saw.

To get a 262 cylinder to fit you need the 262 covers and carb as well.
