Anyone know of better piston options for a 254? Starting to build a play toy.

OEM is still available. Tecomac made a real nice one if you can find it. There is a Forester one available also as an inexpensive alternative. I just put one of those in a 254 myself a couple weeks ago and it's working fine.

One area to mess with is the gasket. There were two gaskets available, (but may only be in the 262 IPL). One was 2mm and one was 1mm. I'm not sure if the 1mm gasket is still available or not. (I'll check cause I need one for mine) I tried to go with no gasket and use 1194, but the piston was hitting up top so I had t scrap that idea.

As I mentioned over at another place, check your squish, I used some aluminum stock for a base gasket, but dont remember the exact measurement, as Spike mentioned there are two different base gaskets, but if you are lucky as I was, the squish with the thinner oe gasket still has some play room.   MY 254 is out on loan till mid spring, if it was here I would have taken it apart and got some measurements.

The 154 had plenty of squish and the best com chamber. Squish tightened as model years progressed and com chamber expanded. Best modern cyl I had was a 2000. Tight squish and small cc. We have a 0-55cc gas class. 254 is pretty much the top saw except for cheater Partners. Alot of good 10mm pin pistons in 45mm, but 254 has 12mm pin.

Turns out there 3 possible base gaskets. Original was .7mm, and there was a service bulletin when it went to 1mm, for "better combustion and idling".

The .7 is NLA. The 1mm is #503704801, and the 2mm is #503704802.

There's also a choice of 1mm and 2mm gaskets on the 242's.

I was just wondering about the pin size of 254 piston. Thanks for posting that info back then Art.
