The overall height difference between the 272 and stock 372 piston is 2mm, the 272 being 4O.5 and the 372 42.5mm. Compression height is the opposite with the 272 piston being 24mm and the 372 at 22.5 an increase of 1.5mm in the 272 piston. All numbers are quoted from the Meteor site.

This is getting very interesting, if one could get increased intake duration and increase compression at the same time........then perhaps the use of an XT carb Tillotson RWJ-4-1 would be justified!

If your numbers above are accurate 0.018-0.020 then the decrease in piston height of 2.0mm ((2.0*0.03937)/0.019) should yield between  4.14° change in intake timing.

without touching a die grinder
that is what I want to do! I want to publish a set recipes using 'off the shelf' parts that the average Joe can follow, without a bunch of grinding or expensive machining and get results close to a custom ported saw, while maintaining reliability.

Don't know if that is where you are at but I think there is a definite audience for these kinds of information. Look how the membership here is growing, so there are at least 2000 folks that would jump all over it IMO.

I spoke to Spike60 briefly by telephone and he seemed to agree that it would be a valuable endeavour.

That is exactly what my video's are all about, simple change for changing power characteristics.... "Farmer Jones" mods!

I get a larger degree change in intake.... if the piston is 1.5mm taller from wrist pin to crown & a full 2.5mm shorter overall length, that means the skirt is a full 4mm different than the stocker. That's a healthy .15in difference or approx. 7.5 degrees advance. But adding a gasket takes .020 so that's a 6.5 degree advance. If the no gasket Jinhua is 76, a gasket one would be 75.... 75+6.5 would put it at 81.5. That's a lot. But not totally unreasonable. A 394 or XT carb.. and muffler mod.... could be interesting!!

I transposed some numbers when I typed the original message. I have corrected them now.

Using the corrected numbers:

Degree change in intake.... if the piston is 1.5mm taller from wrist pin to crown & a full 2.0mm shorter overall length, that means the skirt is a full 3.5mm different than the stocker. That works out to be 0.137in difference or approx. 7.25 degrees advance. But adding a gasket takes .020 so that's a 6.15 degree advance. If the no gasket Jinhua is 76, a gasket one would be 75.... 75+6.15 would put it at 81.15. That's a lot. But not totally unreasonable. A 394 or XT carb.. and muffler mod.... could be interesting!!

The MM is a forgone conclusion probably a 5/8 or perhaps a 3/4 inch tube. The carb on the other hand would have to wait until we see how the saw would go using the stock 12B carb.

I'll stick together a 3/4in tube muffler this weekend. I have two x-torq carb's here. Have two "Jinhua FarmTech" (source of Huztl & many others is my bet) Dark 52mm bb cylinder kits on the way...... Have to go rummage around to see what I have for 372 saw parts. I do have a serviceable 372 bottom end with handle, oil pump, & clutch. Probably need details like chain brake & intake manifold type things. The "boots". Will also need to eBay a top cover, filter cover & pull start. Been under the weather today so that will give me something to do I can do.... rummage & catalog what I need. :)

If it is just an experiment I have a top cover ugly but serviceable and at least 1 good starter, if it is going to start out using the 12B carb I know I have boots and filter horns and even a used hd filter.

More food for thought, a Dolmar 9000 piston is 52mm x 22mm x 44mm and uses the same 12mm diameter pin. And Stihl has a couple of 52mm ones that are only 39.5mm overall with CH of 22.5 mm also 12mm pin.

Turns out I do have most of what I need either on the way, Huztl muffler, pull  start, clutch cover, etc.. What I will need is the chain brake linkage between the "spring/plunger" and handle if that makes any sence I have a handle & spring & brake band. But don't have the internal parts that are attached to the handle/guard. Or the mounting hardware.
