Untapped holes
« on: February 07, 2014, 04:54:28 pm »
Hello all. I've decided to convert my 345 to a 346xp, well, an aftermarket one anyway, and plastic...

So, i bought an aftermarket cylinder and piston from weedeaterman.  The cylinder got good reviews, so i figured WTF.

To fit the cylinder, i needed the base from the 350. It's part number 537324001.  I got it from Partstree today.  Only problem is, it has 8 blank holes, with no threads. Is this normal?  It appears to be a genuine Husqvarna part, with "made in sweden" cast in.

Thanks,
Jon

That does not sound correct to me. I think you should call PartsTree, they are very nice people down there in Austin. Tell them your situation and ask them to pull the part and check to see if the holes are tapped. By looking at the IPLs it appears that they should be. JMO

Pop-rivets ::) yeow I would like to see that in big wood, especially when the jug blew off at WOT and blasted the top cover into orbit!

I have to admit that thought did cross my mind however logic ruled it out. There are four bolts that pass through the bottom of the case and into the base for the 350 these and the base hold the crankshaft and bearings. There are four more bolts that pass through the cylinder flange and into the top of the 350 base holding the cylinder in place. All of these bolts have to be set to factory torque spec. Torqueing self tapping bolts usually does not work too well.

Based on my research, i can't see how these would be self tapping.  The top cylinder bolts go deep into the aluminum. And the screws do not appear to be self tapping type.

Rather than waiting longer, i decided to tap my own holes.  It went well, but took a while.  I went slow, and careful.

Hopefully i'll do up a build thread later.

Thanks for the help.
