i'm just wondering if the cover was meant to be a self tapping.......

I have to admit that thought did cross my mind however logic ruled it out. There are four bolts that pass through the bottom of the case and into the base for the 350 these and the base hold the crankshaft and bearings. There are four more bolts that pass through the cylinder flange and into the top of the 350 base holding the cylinder in place. All of these bolts have to be set to factory torque spec. Torqueing self tapping bolts usually does not work too well.
