What do you use the felling dog for on a chainsaw?

Thanks.

Designed to grab the bark of the tree to give you some leverage when felling. Not much use in smooth bark trees.

Not leverage, if you need that, you lost your file.

They are there to help hold the weight of the saw as well as help when it kicks and it will sometime...

Used for leverage (pivot point) on horizontal cuts as well as up-cuts in Big wood...

I know what the firewood cutters saws I take care of use dawgs for.

Leverage for a dull chain.

I've seen dawgs bent all to heck from the above IMO.

Well it does protect the front of the crankcase and muffler from getting too beat up.  It also is a good pivoting point with no slipping and if you want to lean on the bar a little it provides leverage.

It gives my saws one more sharp thing to draw my blood.
Seriously, it does take the entire weight of the saw off you when bucking.

That is what they get used for a lot of the time. They actually hold the saw steady to maintain a straight cut.

On felling saws I like it very much as it olds the weight of the saw for me.

Limbing small diameter wood, it is mostly in the way as the saw skids on the tree.
