Got a little corretion here. 

The 66 is somewhat different from the 266XP. The 66 used the same 50mm open port cylinder as the non-XP 268, or 268 Special as it was also called. It was only around for a few years and is one of the rarer models of the many built on this chassis, both orange and Red.

Nothing wrong with putting the 66 top end on the 272 chassis. If that's what you've got to work with, and your objective is a good running saw, you'll certainly have one.

I don't think the 268 Special was the open-port 268, rather it was a model made of the same parts as the 268xp, but made (assambled) after the 272xp had replaced the 268xp. 

Also, the 266xp still was made for about 10 years after it was replaced by the 268xp in the US. The 268xp never was offered over here, which is a bit odd....

That saw family surely isn't easy to figure out the "complete" story of....
