will a husqvarna 66 interchange with 272
« on: January 17, 2012, 03:54:46 pm »
i need to know if i can interchange a 272 piston and cylinder on a 66 case and make it work? i been doing some research and it says that they will interchange but i'm not really sure on what i read on the internet. so if anyone can shed some light on this please do so. i really like to know if i can or not and make it work. i know a 268 and a 272 will interchange but i'm not totally sure about the 66 and a 272 will or not. i know a few parts from the 66 will work on a 272 but i know not all of the parts will interchange. if someone can help me please i would be great fully appreciated.

Yep!  66 is basically a 266.  You will need the complete 272 intake system inc. carb screws.

Why not compare the IPLs - they are on Huskys US website, under "support".

From a collectors point of view I think it would be nuts doing it.
Better shift saws and get it right.

66 is much less common.

Got a little corretion here.  :)

The 66 is somewhat different from the 266XP. The 66 used the same 50mm open port cylinder as the non-XP 268, or 268 Special as it was also called. It was only around for a few years and is one of the rarer models of the many built on this chassis, both orange and Red.

Nothing wrong with putting the 66 top end on the 272 chassis. If that's what you've got to work with, and your objective is a good running saw, you'll certainly have one.

Spike I have a question. Was the 268xp a US only model? Seen tons of open port 268s up here in Eastern Canada but never a XP model.

I really don't know much about the Canadian model mix, so I can't say why the XP's would be so rare up there. But I'm sure the 268XP was not a US only model.

There was some overlap due to what product was in the pipeline, but down here the 268XP was replaced by the 272XP. At about the same time, the 268 open port was introduced as a model to slot in between the 272 and the 61. I'm not actually sure whether the open port 268 or the 272XP arrived here first. Again, there was a lot of overlap at that time. But when the dust settled, the model progression was 61 to 268 Special to 272XP.

66 and 268 I took on trade on racing stuff when I got out of it. 66 went to a collector in Finland.

I don't think the 268 Special was the open-port 268, rather it was a model made of the same parts as the 268xp, but made (assambled) after the 272xp had replaced the 268xp.  ;)

Also, the 266xp still was made for about 10 years after it was replaced by the 268xp in the US. The 268xp never was offered over here, which is a bit odd....

That saw family surely isn't easy to figure out the "complete" story of.... ;D
