Title: 550XP Clutch tool
Post by: Tzed250 on August 04, 2012, 02:34:14 pm
I needed a tool to remove the clutch on my 550XP, so I made one.
2" cold rolled round. I faced the ends in the lathe and drilled a 15/32" hole through the center. Next, I moved the part to the mill where I cut a .5" square socket in the center. The next step was to drill three .25" holes through the part on a 1.20" BHC. I used 1/4-20 stainless SHCS for the divers. Correct fit in the clutch was obtained by turning the heads to a .34" diameter. As you can see in the final pic the tool fits firmly into the clutch, and is shown with a 3/8-1/2 adapter inserted. Hope this helps!

Agreed, the satisfaction of building your own tools is worth it alone.  Nice work

GOOD JOB on that tool, and take it from me that you would not want to buy one from HVA.to see how cheaply it's made and how exspensive it is to buy   :o

Yeah, some manufacturers special tools aren't so special.

Excellent job on the tool.  Should work for most all the clutches that use 3 springs over one large single round spring.  I wont use air anymore because I kept breaking the parts.  The clutch spider and shoes are made light duty in order to keep the weight down and that makes them easy to crack.
