Title: Stihl 038 Magnum
Post by: Malcolm on August 07, 2012, 10:35:16 pm
Hi guys, I have a Stihl 038 Magnum that runs excellent after first start up and uses one tank of fuel. After refueling there is no way to restart the saw, it just wont start. Go out to cut firewood the following day and the same procedures as above occurs. Have changed spark plug and filters, cleaned whole machine but still the same.
I also have taken it to a Stihl repair centre who stated there is no problem, also taken it to another repair outlet that also said there is no problem. But there is and it wont go away.
Please if anyone has any idea I would be very much appreciated.
Regards Malcolm

For what ever reason it's loosing it's fuel charge and I would suspect stiff innards in the carb diaphragms .

As just an observation this model is perhaps one of Stihls best efforts of any saw they ever built .I have two mags and one 038 av .The one souped up version which will cut on a par with an 066 but if it sits for a day requires up to 10 pulls to get started but after that fires 90 percent of the time on one .

I've been wrong a number of times but my casual observation is to re kit the carb .

After rethinking this if you run the saw until you run out the tank it will indeed take  a number of pulls to get it going .You have to evacuate all that air in the fuel line before it sucks any gas .

Next time it refuses to start give it a little squirt of mix gas through the carb .If it putts you have a problem with fuel delivery ,if not to have a spark issue .

Thanks Al for your quick response. But I did not explain properly, I actually turn the saw off before running out of fuel to allow for refueling.
I was explaining to a mate last night of the problem and he suggested it might be a faulty magneto? I surpose anything is worth a try.

Well if after you shut it down you might test and see if it has spark .That would tell the tale .
