Wondering if anyone has tried to put a 044 cyl on a 036 or 361? Brother in law has a 357 with a 272 topend. Want to try it with Stihl.

From my perspective on this business  you'd just about have to have a semi truck full of parts to try some of this frankenstien stuff . I'm not saying it couldn't be done but again you have different bolt patterns for the cylinders and different piston lengths .Not to mention in some instances different piston pin diameters more compounding the  situation .

Some like an 036 top on an 034 bottom are just a bolt on .However like these guys making an 038 mag from an 038Av to me the time and cost don't justify the end  .

I've never discouraged  anybody from anything just a note ,exactly  what's the end product ?

 To beat the BIL's 272/357. No more no less.

Going with a frankensaw won't be my choice but if you want to go this route just put on a 038 super top ( 50mm ) , same bolt patern and 2mm larger bore .
For the piston , use a 044 10mm pin piston . The only problem is the exhaust is at an angle on the 036 and the 038 is straight .

No doubt it would be a challange .You might have different rod lengths ,different center line measurements from the piston pin to the crown and a zillion other things .Not to mention even if the pin to crown would fit is there enough skirt for the intake ?

Even if you have a pile of parts without actually knowing this data ahead of time  it would take you a month of Sundays to figure it out .

I dug up some data .Both the 038 super in fact all 038's have a 34 MM stroke .The 036 also has a 34 MM stroke .The 038 Super which is 50 MM bore is 66.8 CC which is exactly then what this 036 would be provided all the parts fit .

Way back when I didn't know how to build a real racesaw I used to do this kind of thing and I can tell you the 038 cylinder with 044 10mm pin piston fits there perfect , no need machine the base of the cylinder or the piston .

So then if an 038 cylinder would bolt on to an 036 it would also bolt on to an 034 .Hmm.

Now the big problem ,finding an 038 super .I think I've only ever seen two of them .038 AV's and Mags galore just no supers .

Hey, first post here, reviving an old thread because it’s the closest I’ve found to the information I’m looking for and quite recently somebody built the 36/44 hybrid on ope forum http://opeforum.com/threads/stihl-036-044-hybrid-build.12242/page-2
What I’m most interested in is finding more information on putting a 50mm super cylinder on a 034/036 using the 10mm 044 piston. I’ve seen that yes it can be done but not much information other than that. How well does it run, I know I’ll have muffler issues to sort out, but other than that any information would be great. New to saws just looking to build and have fun. Just rebuilt a carb on my first saw an 041Fb recently and I’m hooked.
