Title: Stihl MS250 C
Post by: Cut4fun . on October 12, 2012, 01:39:16 pm
Just had a  stihl 250 dropped off and seen a  C on the recoil. Just wondering what the C means on the stihls?  I dont have time to check saw over right this second to figure it out myself, so I thought I would ask.

Guessing easy start?

It has a compression release and a tool less chain adjuster. Sometimes there is the elastic pull handle?

Like I said just glanced at it. Dont know if it does have a elastic start handle etc.   I've just never seen a C before so wondered.

660 I need to correct some of your info.  Has tool less cover but No compression release.  No elastic handle.

Has primer bulb and easy start recoil.  Hard for me to get used to that but works good.

What's different about the "Easy Start Recoil"?

Sticks out further. It pulls over very easily out, it stops then it rotates to start it. Like I was winding something up. I will be here to about 5pm if you want to check it out.

Has H L LA carb which is good but H was against stop and turning 14.8K  :o :o  Got out the dremel and fixed that, now turning 12.5K.

I can see the easy start being useful for some people. I think a think a 3 year old could pull them since they are so easy IMO.

What did you think 660mag?

I haven't worked on a 250 C but I've rebuilt several 250 this year that were straight gassed

But the two 250 I owned are set to 13,000

Seems this home owner saw get straight gassed alot by there owners

There easy to rebuild and work on and parts are cheap for that series

I've seen two different carbs on them (depends on the year of the saw) on the Zama carb all you have to do is pull the roll pin out and that fixes the limiter

The "Easy Start" on the Stihl 250C that cut4fun had at his house this afternoon was unbelievably easy to pull. Not being accustomed to it and owning a regular 025, I pulled the cord all the way out and let the handle go back into the starter. Then the engine turned over and started as the Stihl 250C was stihl warm from being run earlier. I shut it off and restarted it several times this way.

There is no compression release or Elastostart on this one for it is not needed.

It would take a mighty stout woman to start my regular 025 for it has very strong compression and no compression release. If it is cold, I have to start it on the ground.

I have a Dolmar 5105 that is supposed to be "Easy Start" and it has a wrap spring between the starter pulley and the crankshaft but it doesn't work as easy as the one on the /Stihl 250 that I used today.

I'll bet that thing has an inertia starter on it .Remember way back they made lawn mowers you wind up ,clip the handle over and a wound up spring turned the engine over .

They worked great until the starter fell apart .Then about the only way you could get it started is with a drill motor and a deep socket on the nut .

I wrote this before Al replied in the previous post . . .

The situation discussed by cut4fun, as he observed me, was that the fellow that has never seen a Easy Start before will essentially pick it up and jerk the starter cord all the way out . . . and . . . and . . . nothing happens . . . Then the engine goes through a compression stroke.

Though I did not try it due to time limitations, it was discussed, that possibly, the starter handle could either be pulled out slowly or in several short strokes and the engine then turns over?

We certainly decided that it was not necessary to jerk the starter handle with a deliberate, long hard jerk as we are accustomed to with a non Easy Start chainsaw.

Al,

In illustration "K" of the IPL for the 250, the easy start starter sticks out farther than than a regular starter.

There is a spring housing ( item 15) between the starter pulley and the clutch unit where the pawls engage.

There is also a different flywheel and coil.

It's a clever idea no doubt .The 250 is basically a consumer saw and anything that would make it easier to operate would be a selling point .

When they strated putting compression releases on little 3 cubers I thought WTH .Then it dawned on me why they did it .

It wouldn't be that unusual to see a old 250 with a compression release and/or a Elastostart handle.

Speaking of which .Baileys had some knock off elasto start handles then stopped selling them for some reason . I've got one on one of my 200T's .

Evidently Gregg Grande sent about a half a pick up load of stuff to Brad S who brought it to one of Bill Poors GTG's .Pistons ,handles ,posters of Gerry B in the top of that giant red wood ,just all kinds of stuff .
