Title: Stihl 880 woods ported
Post by: Cut4fun on December 01, 2012, 07:18:28 am
Dang Ole Dennis Cahoon woods ported a new stihl MS880 he had for sale.  Now we know how to get him to do some work on work saws, buy a stock saw from him and beg him to warm it up before sending it off.

Looks like that 880 and 36" X .404" bar takes a little extra bracing to get up on the log?

I only have a 30" bar on my 084 and I prefer to let it rest on the wood. I wouldn't want to limb a spruce with one.

The 084 I have in the shed really is not mine although I've been the only one to run it for about the last 4 years .It sports a 42" .

That thing is a load allright .For a large saw the thing starts easy and I fire it up every few months just to keep it limbered up .Other than a few GTG's that thing hasn't done lick of work for 5-6 years .

I'd like to see FMC's 880 in a big stick where it could get right down and dirty and pull like a Georgia mule like those things are capable of .That round he ran it through was childs play for that saw .You can tell by the sound that thing had a lot more .

Yes, my 084 is as original as can be.

With only a 30" bar it cuts into wood that big just as natural and normal as can be. It feels right at home.

It has not seen much use since I've had it or the guy before me.

Oh I doubt the big guns even get much use on the left coast .

You know the PNW no doubt has larger trees than we but I'd just about bet the percentage of large trees felled about equals our large oaks which is not many if figuring in  the whole amount . That accounts for those large displacement saws lasting for decades .

I've got a big bur oak about a 4 footer and over a hundred tall I told a buddy I'd flop for him .May get it done this fall or may not .If not it can wait for good weather because it's a lead pipe cinch nobody will steal it . ;)

Going by Dennis post on Racesaws.   From left yo right, [42" 404 Stihl sprocket tip] [42" Oregon roller nose] [44" Carlton tsmura 3/8's tip bar]. The first 2 are used and the 3rd bar is brand new. It was a hard tip, that I converted to a sprocket tip. Something to consider with the MS880.

I have a 36" bar for my 660 and it is a different game compared with the 25" bar on that chainsaw.

The 42" X .404 bar would make you think about a helper handle on the tip?

A 42" isn't really that bad .You know that's a pretty heavy power unit and it about balances with about that amount of bar ,a tad nose heavy ..A 36" is just about a perfect balance on an 066 .

An 084 especially with a 7 tooth .404 all you have to do is get to the wood, hook a dog and give it's head .The big saw does the  rest .Kinda like dropping the reins on a horse heading for the barn ,it'll find it's way you just have to hang on .
