Title: Chainsaw Chain
Post by: davbell22602 on December 01, 2012, 10:02:23 pm
Has anybody ever used the Silver Streak or Carlton chainsaw chain? Whats the pros and cons on using them? I know the Silver Streak is light weight like Oregon and is rated for the homeowner. The Carlton chain is heavy like the Stihl chain but its rated for the loggers.

Carlton is now owned by Blount, Oregon's parent company. It has always been good chain. Apparently they are going to concentrate on Europe with it. Silver Streak is another Blount company, it is now called Oregon Outdoor Product. I don't see chain in their catalog.

Silver Streak or "SS" chain is now a Chinese made chain. It is said that the cutters are smaller, soft, and the chain stretches easily.

Apparently Stens is the importer but it is sold by several big name marketers

Yes the Silver Streak is just homeowner rated chain. I got chain of each try on a Poulan 2250 18in when I get it fixed that Stens to try.

You want to wake that 2250 up throw a loop of Stihl PS3 3/8LP round chisel cutter chain on it.  ;D

Thread on it and testing against other chains.  http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/chain/picco-38lp-round-chisel-cutter-chain/

Yep on VX and VXL being easier on the files. Thats what I used to use.

I like the chisel ps3 on my extendable pole saw for getting through the cuts faster.  Gets pretty heavy on slower cutting.

Oh pole saws. One of these days I'll find a better one .What I have now is a little Poulan flex shaft deal that is better than nothing but is certainly is no barn burner . It's got the original guard chain on it which probabley doesn't help matters .

Now why it the world they would ever use that type chain on a pole saw I'll never know .What exactly could it hit if it did kick back, a squirrel in a tree ?

I heard of the 63PM1/pm, 33rm2/rs, 26rm/rs, and 61 pmn. I used work for Stihl dealer back in 96. I got Stihl bar and chain guide that they put out back in 1992.

I think they call it picco super and it's definately faster than regular picco .

I speculate that if it goes over good in the market place that Oregon will follow suit with some form of chisel in low profile 3/8" chain .

FWIW the Picco super is about a dollar more per 50 driver loop than standard regular Stihl picco .

I heard of the 63PM1/pm,

63pm is semi chisel chain.  (rounded corner)

63ps3 is round chisel chain (squared corner)

Nice. I never did really care for the round cutters anyway.

Ok. Cost is more than the chisel chain.
