Title: Which Poulan Pro chainsaws have plated cylinders?
Post by: Eccentric on December 12, 2012, 02:40:11 am
Not sure if anyone but me cares about this, but.....

It's my understanding that some of the Poulan Pro branded versions of similar Poulan chainsaws have chromed bores and bare pistons in place of the bare bores and plated pistons of the 'more pedestrian' Poulan versions (and Craftsman branded versions) that they are similar to.

Which Poulan Pro models does this apply to................and which PP models still have the bare cylinder/plated piston combo that's used in the non-PP saws?

I'm not trying to start an argument over the merits and/or shortfalls associated with having bare bores and plated pistons vs the 'normal' plated cylinder/bare piston configuration.  Just trying to get a handle on which PP saws had what.

These are the saws I'm thinking of.  There are more models I'm sure.  When they pop up on feebay and CL, I'd like to have an idea about what configuration they have before I drive to see the saw or bid....

If anybody cares to answer this.....would you mind putting a "(C)" or "(A)" next to each model to designate whether it's a Chromed or bare Aluminum bore?  Also, if you feel like putting the Poulan model # that the PP saw is close to next to that (also in parenthesis to keep things separate) I'd appreciate that too.  Feel free to add models or make other modifications to this 'chart' as you see fit.  You folks know much more about these 'modern' Poulans than I do.

PP380  (3800-ish?)

I just deleted my saw list because I just seen you wanted poulan pro saws only?  I thought all poulan pros were chromed cylinder.

Just some of the non pros like poulan 3300 was A and the PP335 C  etc.

I have a PP236 and 2100 and never been inside though.

I though also that all the Poulan Pro series saws in yellow had a chrome bore on the cylinder.

Here are some.

PP 365  (C)

Thanks guys.  I guess I should have just asked if all yellow PP saws had chromed jugs........but I have a habit of being long winded.  I didn't ask about the 'regular' Poulans (and Craftsman branded variants), as I thought I'd start a separate thread for them after this one ran its course.

So..........are all yellow/black PP saws equipped with chromed cylinders?

These two I know to be chromed.

PP330 (C)
PP380 (C)

I think it is a given that all the Poulan Pro yellow saws are going to have a chrome cylinder.  Where it gets confusing is the green saws.  Also this does not always apply to craftsman saws as some were labled 3.7 meaning 3700 and were actually 3800.

Make as many threads as you want.

Because I can guarantee things wont get lost in the shuffle here and thats why I set the site up the way I did.

I dont know the older stuff  much at all so thats all up to you guys. Even though I know the poulan 4200 4900 5200 5400 8500 are super strong cutters, I just dont have no interest in any saws with reeds. I just like the newer poulans from the late 80's to 2005 or so.  OK my little poulans 2000 1800 2100 etc have a reed they are the exceptions.  :D

Thanks for the input.  I won't hold your 'reed' prejudice against you.  I'll be happy to take all the 4200-8500, PP455, PP525, and PP655/655BP saws that would otherwise be offending your sensibilities.:D

I prefer plated cylinders (and steel liners) to unplated aluminum cylinders.........but I do like Micros and 3400/3800 Poulans.  We can get past our hangups sometimes...:D

Better check the 245 and others I just posted in CL today.  Older post a 4200

All I ask is dont ask me to drive and get any of them please. Thats why I dont own them to flip or trade off anyways. I'm working 7 days a week right now. No time and just burned out on travel.

I was somewhat skeptical of the 3800's myself until I dropped the cylinders on a couple of them and got the compression up to 150 psi.  What a difference it made.

You posted up some great stuff.  I don't blame you on the no time/burned out on travel thing.  That 4200, 288XP, 3750TA, and 245SA would be very interesting to me if they were local.  Probably just as well that they're not however.  Gotta curtail the saw spending for a while.  Trying to sell off a few in fact......

There is a couple of exceptions to the Poulan Pro gold/black being chromed. Around 2000/2001 they bulit two non-AV saws. Models 222 and 262. They were trying to market off of the success of the 220 and 260, but it didn't work. The 220 and 260 were great litttle saws. The 222 and 262 were nothing but a 2375 Wildthing wrapped in gold plastic.

Do you know if the 222 and 262 had chrome cylinders.   I will add them to my list.

Neither the 222 or the 262 had chrome plated cylinders. There were several burgundy Poulan Pro units that were sold by Walmart. The model numbers started with PPB. None of the PPB units had the chrome plating.
