Title: Pioneer 3071 -- Who's Got One?
Post by: tbone0106 on December 30, 2012, 06:04:01 pm
I love my forty-year-old saws, but sometimes it's a pain in the a$$ trying to find parts for them. Several years ago, I picked up a Pioneer 3071 saw that I'd LOVE to get working, but I need a couple things for it. I need a NOS fuel cap and a felling (or bucking) claw. The saw came to me without the claw, and with a leaky fuel cap.

Any Pioneer aficionados out there? C'mon, you can admit it...  :D

This member deals in Pioneer parts.   tommysp61   http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/index.php?action=profile;u=551

I have bought from him and he was straight up good to deal with.

Most pioneer bucking spikes were interchangable as I have used nu-17 spikes on many of the p series saws.  Could you get a rough measurement and I could measure my nu-17 spikes as its the only saw that has these type on it still in my posession. If I remember correctly the 3017 was the first electronic ignition. And was the direct predasessor to the p40. HUGE fan of Pioneer saws here.

The mounting holes on my 3071 are exactly 4" center-to-center, as near as I can measure. I've checked the 3071 part number against a slew of other Pioneer saws and found no matches, but that probably doesn't mean much.

You're right, the 3071 was the first Pioneer to have electronic ignition, and it was replaced by the P40 in 1973. The two used the same four-cube engine. Lotsa guts for the size.

I appreciate your time, dude.

Problem solved! I stumbled across a thread on another board that discussed old Pioneer parts in general, and one poster pointed out that when Poulan bought Pioneer (yeah, weird) they continued to market and make a lot of parts for the old saws but they changed all the old part numbers. Mostly what they did was add the digits 507 to the front of the old Pioneer P/N. In this case, the spike kit for a 3071 -- and yes, a LOT of other Pioneer saws -- was Pioneer P/N 473645, and became Poulan P/N 507473645.

And guess what? Poulan P/N 507473645 can be had for $7 + freight from -- drum roll please -- Sears Parts Direct. Mine will be here next week.

Hehehehe...

Also, the fuel cap problem is essentially solved. A new O-ring helped some, but it still leaked like crazy through that center vent -- this is a side-cap tank, of course. On a whim, I tried to wiggle a standard Homelite-style rubber duckbill vent into that hole and... perfect! (Actually, it still seeps just a tad, but not so much I can't live with it. I dump the fuel out after I use a saw anyhow.)

As of today, after a fresh rebuild of the Tillotson carb and some PermaGasket magic on the leaky reed housing/crankcase gasket, my 40-year-old 3071 is running like it was 40 minutes old.

I think I just peed a little....  :P

Glad to hear it and sorry my reply post never posted......The nu-17&p series saws spikes will fit yours. I posted from my phone but must have goofed it so again I apologize....... stuff in the 80's did get weird as electrolux purchased pioneer and put it with partner only to a few years later gain controlling interest of poulan and turn over both of these classics designs to poulan......thats how I have been lead to believe the story anyway........It did lead to the best of best for pioneer design though in the form of the mighty pp655bp which I had one of in my posesssion but sold it to a local collector..... Funnest stock saw Ive ran. I have the parts to assemble an early Iel RA/pioneer 620 if I can find the time. I have a running nu-17 and a running 1110. I have owned&ran a p38,p39,farmsaw2,p51,pp655,pp655bp all of which needed a little work when I got them but all I found easy&user freindly to work on. Oh yeah I also have a Target cutoff saw which has the 60series powerhead but I have not checked it to see if might be a "boost port" cylinder or not...It runs well and I actually use it quite a bit so Im in no hurry to tear it down.
