Title: Text/background color suggestion
Post by: John Mc on January 10, 2013, 11:16:04 am
A suggestion to make the sight a bit more readable:

I like the look of the wood chip background, but when a topic gets long enough to span multiple pages, the page number links at the top and bottom of the topic are getting lost in the wood chips, making it difficult to skip forward or back a page.  Similarly, the text that shows the pathname to the current topic (and lets you click on various sections of the path to go directly there) is also hard to see. (for example, "Chainsaw Repair » Forum » Suggestions - Announcements » Suggestions - Problems - Announcements » topic name".

The buttons for Help, Search, Profile, My Message, Calendar, Members, and Logout are also hard to see, but at least those get highlighted when you mouse over them.

I don't know if this is just my laptop screen not displaying the colors in high enough contrast, or if it's the choice of colors, but is there anything you can do to make this stand out a bit better?

Went with a different blue. See if you can see better now.

Also I had noticed on my laptop if you had the angle of the screen off it would be hard to see too. So check the angles of your laptop screen.

Still very difficult for me to make out, at any screen angle, though now I can at least more easily tell that there is some text there, even if I can't read it all that well.  (My laptop - a MacBook Pro - is a bit old, but it's not a "low-end" machine.  The screen has decent resolution.)  The text in black is still not easy, but more visible than the blue (to me at least).

Those are black lettered and plain as day on my screen and like you said they highlight when scrolled over too.

It's perfect reading on this end and the blue is almost to bright on this end.

I might change it back to darkblue. Sorry.

OK -- not all that big a deal to me since I already know my way around a bit.

I did check it out on my wife's brand new iMac w/21.5" screen -- it's slightly better there, but that text still does tend to get lost in the background.

The green you had up briefly was worse...

I'm goofing around with colors. Blue still seems best on my end.

Dont care for the look of boring black, but how does that work for you guys having trouble reading?

Black is a bit better than blue on my screen, except where it crosses a darker portion of the wood chips.

I think one of the problems is that the background is so varied in color and darkness.  It's hard to find something that shows up well against the whole range of background colors.  It's really only in that band of wood chips that I have the worst problem.

If no one else is having difficulties, don't knock yourself out on my account.

I went with the stock forum back ground and dark blue lettering. Now check your puter.

I'm not messing with the top banner stuff.

Very readable.  Are you OK with losing the wood chip look?  I'd hate to lose that if I was the only one having trouble reading it.

The top banner is readable as is... and as we discussed, the buttons highlight as you pass over them anyway.

Without the chips seems boring but I can live with it.  I have ask the mods for input to see if we should or should not put them back for looks.

But if others were having troubles seeing the text in the chips I need to know.

John you ever  had the color blindness test run?

I'm a pilot... I have to get that checked every two years (not sure why... color blindness is not supposed to change over time).

I have a very mild red/green color blindness.  Basically, I always pass the test, but there is some hesitation while I'm looking at the color plates.  I had no idea I even had the condition until I was tested for my pilot's license... I never have trouble distinguishing traffic lights or colors of markers or paper.

Red/Green color blindness is very common in men, and lots of men have it without ever knowing it.  If my problem viewing it was related to R/G colorblindness, then I would expect a number of your members would have had the same problem.

I have no deficiency at all in the blue spectrum (which is a much rarer form of color blindness).

I just remember taking that test in the military and thought I wonder if.  ;)

The chips with different colored lettering reminding me of some of the test when I was goofing around.

I like the wood chips better.
