Title: Saws and Cars
Post by: Cut4fun . on February 06, 2013, 12:59:36 pm
Thought a thread with saws on cars or cars in back ground would be cool. Try and guess the car etc they are setting on or in partial view etc.

The blue one is easy.   It is a 68 or 69 camaro.   The red one I just cannot see enough of it to tell.

Only reason I put a saw on this car at the time. I lost my 1800's barn on top of it and it was just setting out (reason for rear plastic window going dark colored and dents on trunk.

Nice cars by the way.   I like that Stihl 066 also.   All great machines.

I think I remember something that you mentioned before about the barn falling on the cars.   What a shame that was.

The storm with the strong straight line winds is called a Derecho

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derecho

They said it was 100mph straight line winds that came through that blew the barn off it's foundation and sheared pines, spruces off at 8'  or so right off.  Never heard the word Derecho

There's another straight line wind situation that tends to be more localized.

Actually....................there are three saws on that hood in the pic.  The one on the far right is too obscured for most to identify.  That one's there for bonus points. :D

Shep is right on with the Homelite Super E-Z AOW (W meaning Western).

Shep also gets the bonus point with the Homelite XL-103!  I'm impressed.

Big saw is an old warhorse of a Homelite 750.  Former redwood logging saw.  Still letting you guess on the vehicle.  Nobody's gotten close yet...

1971 IHC 1210 4WD crew cab pickup.  The 4-door pickups were called a Travelette by IHC.  This one has a 4V 392 V8 and an IH/Fuller T34 O/D 5-speed.  One of my many projects that are waiting for time/money/shop space....

Drove several IHC 1690, 1700, 1800 trucks with a 5 spd OD and 2 spd axle. The 20,000 and 24,000 GVW trucks had 345's but the 27,000 GVW 1800's had 392's. To hear me tell it, they drove like cars. Late 60's. I drove them in the hills as well as the flat lands. The 366 chevys and 390 LN fords were not any better than the IHC's.

At one location there was a 1969 3/4T 2WD pickup with a 304 V8 and 4 SPD. It was new but was more like the early 50's in the way it drove and felt. Reminded me of the old Dodge 3/4 Army trucks I drove in the army except it had more power.

Good stuff Jim.  At the park where I volunteer at, we have an ex Air Force 1971 Loadstar 1700 with a 45' Hi-Ranger insulated bucket boom.  Has a 2V 345 and a direct-5th T35 5-speed.  Unfortunately it has a single speed rear.

The widow of a friend has his stakeside flat bed dump Loadstar (year unknown, but it's somewhere between 1967 and 1973).  Has a 345, 5-speed (think it's a direct 5th), and a 2-speed rear end.  I hope to buy it from her some time soon.

The guy that picks up my trash has a fleet of Internationals with DT466 diesels and automatics. I don't know the GVW's but they look to be at least 24,000 - single axle. To my surprise, his wife says they bought all of them used as chassis/cabs. They all have white cabs.

Post by: RoyM on March 15, 2015, 02:11:52 pm
I guessed International from the hood and the unique windshield, drove too many of those not to notice.  ;D I learned to drive a 5 spd with a split axle in a late 60's 5 ton. No great shakes for power and a bit of a pig to drive but it got the job done. The later trucks with the DT-466 and seven speed and power steering were a treat in comparison.

Only DT466 powered truck that I've driven so far was a 4300 rental moving truck with an automatic.  Certainly wasn't hurting for power, even with the box full of my junk.

I found this tidbit of Carlton Sawchain sponsoring this GTO
13.20 sec is quick for this street car.

My goat a 1970 Formula 400 got low 11's in the full 1/4 mile. None of this 1/8 chit they do today.
But mind you I was running 448 cubes, 12.5 compression, ram air IV top end , running on alky with a 430 rear end on slicks, shifting with a Hurst verticle gate on a Muncie m22 rock crusher  ;D
NHRA top alcohol  Funny car legend Vern Moats out of Des Moines, Iowa built the engine in early 1970s.

Jeez, I just googled my engine builder Vern Moats and find out he just died last week.

I bought my Firebird in 1975 when I was timber falling at 17 here in northern Manitoba .  I bought it off my foremen who was getting out of racing and getting married. He had Vern Moats build the engine with M22 tranny in 1973.

Here's the death notice of Vern plus a NHRA video from 2015.

Pretty neat stuff Holman.  I did some bracket racing back in the day myself down in southern California when they still had 1/4 mile drag strips there.     70 Dodge Challenger with a 440.    Turned 12:30's.   It was a blast.

3000, yes definitely a blast. My buddy had a white 73 or 74?Challanger 340- 4 sp. Real nice looking car with Crager Ss wheels.
I had those Cragers on my black bird too, kept it on the street with 3.91 rearend. 4"×15" Volkswagen tires on front L50's Micky Thompsons on the rear. White L88 scoop on hood.

I quickly retired  the 4.30's and kept it on gas. Plenty enough power for the street at 500 horse on gas  with 50 weight aviation engine oil in 1975 haha.

Car was long gone and sold by the time I got married at 21.
7 years later after the divorce the wife burned all my pics and photo albums of it.
But I'm still trying to get a hold of an old buddy of mine who had lots of pics of the old Firebird and other cars we had on those great summer days on main street. 8)

Holy cow Kevin, that's nice! A buddy of mine who worked at the paper mill bought a 1970 or so GTO Judge brand new back in the day.
I had a few fast Chevs, Fords but I liked the Poncho engines the best, lots of torque.

I had a chance once to buy a 65 GTO 389 Tri power convertible in 1978. Really nice shape but I thought $3000 was too much back then lol.
I paid $4000 for my 1970 1/2 Firebird in 1975 but the car was built up pretty good especially with the Vern Moat engine and m22 rock crusher and extra gear for the track.

Had a guy in '76 who wanted to trade his 1970 Barracuda 440-6 pak 4 spd, orange with white interior for my 'bird if I threw in a extra $2K.
That car was in mint shape but he couldn't get the carbs set right. So I chickened out of the deal.....now you and me both know what that car would be worth today, right? :o

I found this 6 year video of this 1970 1/2 Formula 400 . Too bad he didn't make such a shaky video with that old phone.

But nice vid though, shows the nice lines of these older 'birds in color black. Mine had the dual snorkel hood scoops replaced with a cowl induction L88 scoop like on the Corvettes.
I don't like how he recovered the bucket seats with that overstuffed grey fabric. The original solid black vinyl looks so much better.
At least he kept the low back buckets as this was the last year with them. The newer high backs lost alot of coolness in my opinion.

Roy,  yep in Winnipeg.
I flew out yesterday morning and got in the city by 8:30am. MRI appointment wasn't until 5:00. So I went to the movies and watched The Founder, Michael Keaton's portrayal of Ray Kroc. Great movie a must see.

MRI was noisy painful for having to lay in that tube for 20 minutes without moving a muscle.
7:30 pm got back on our local airline's 328 Jet return flight back to Thompson. We just clear the runway and get to about 10,000 ft and we start to lose power going from near idle to mid power back and forth as we lose altitude......all the way back to the airport!
Pilots landed us safely and we're back in the airport downing shots in the lounge
Airline brings their other 328Jet out of their hanger and we're back on our way with free drinks on the house.
So much for my New Years resolution  :D :D

Better to be alive and having a few drinks in the bar. Then not being able to make that choice every again. ;)

I remember times being on in flight emergency's in the military.  C-130 1 engine out, 1 on fire, flying on the 2 left. They said dont worry we could fly it on 1 if we had too.
This as we are going over the desert over Turkey.
Being security I knew what we was up to when I seen the landing party below.   Fun fun glad to be able to have those drinks.  CHEERS to you. ;)

One of our passengers was an off duty stewardess who flew in on the plane working the day shift.
She was handling it pretty good, as she was texting the hanger for updates as we were sitting in the lounge.
With a toast with her glass of red wine she says " When I heard that whistle I knew something was wrong." she said with a big laugh. ;D
