Title: MS 311
Post by: bwdogman on March 03, 2013, 12:51:08 pm
I have a stihl ms 311 and got the h limiter off and went to set it with a tach and with a clean air filter can only get it to 12,800 and thats with the screw clear in. Any suggestions welcome. I'm not much of a 2 stroke guy but have always kept my own stuff running and this thing has the stranges carburetor on it.

I know nothing about a 311. But is it rev-limited in anyway?

It may be I don't know for sure but the local dealer said to set the rpm at 13,000. I can contact him to see what he thinks but I was just wanting input from the forum.

Try to set the high speed as you are making a cut. I am not sure if it has a rev limiter coil or not but if it does, that is how i would go about setting it. that is how i set my 201t that has a rev limiter. I would be happy with 12,800. 200 rpm is not going to kill you in a work saw anyway

I wasn't all that concerned with the 200 rpm's I was more worried about having the mixture screw turned clear in.

Did you rebuild the carb? And if you did, you have to make sure the air valve linkage is installed correctly. That is the piece on top of the metering diaphragm.

Have you removed the stops from the L and H?  You may just be at the end of factory settings, because of the stops keeping you from getting full adjustment.  I dont know on 311, but on 290 310 390 I used drywall screw to remove the plastic stops to gain full adjustment.

I removed the stops and the screw is clear in and thats what's making nervous.

It was 4 stroking one day when i was in a big log. Cleaned the air filter and it ran better but just thought i would check it with a tach

How old is the saw? I would back the screw back out to the basic setting. Have you messed with the low speed screw any. I wonder if the are dependant on each other. Try to lean out the low speed some and see if your high speed comes up. I have done that on some older saws to get the high speed set right.
