Title: Super 2 SL smoking like crazy
Post by: Remington on March 10, 2013, 11:14:27 pm
Hey guys, got a super 2 SL that I just put together and it runs fine but smokes like crazy, looked like whiteish smoke.. do you guys think I mixed up the oil lines and I'm pumping bar oil into the engine.

It's getting bar oil some way or another

I hate the lines on this thing and the manual is not very clear.  I have another one but I was hoping to not have to take them both apart.

I did that once (mixed up the lines).  Smoked like a bug fogger.  Does your saw have the diaphragm/piston oil pump, or only the pressurized oil tank?

sounds like a valve that's leaking chain-oil ::)

Have a go on running it without chainoil  ;D

If I'm not mistaken they use a pressurized oil tank with a duckbill type check valve which is probabley not functioning .

Early saws had a pressurized oil tank that feeds a diaphragm oil pump.  Later saws have only the pressurized oil tank.

I too thought it was the oiler......On my XL-2 when I put a new diaphragm in the carb.      The setting was off. It seemed to not shut off the fuel. It ran super rich fuel and oil would not rev up all that well and smoke like crazy. I reset the diaphragm and it strarted to work OK.

I'm going into it soon and we will see just why its smoking.

It was really bad when I started it yesterday,  I don't think its fuel, it left a cloud in the air and that cloud moved across the field like a ghost and could be seen minutes after.  I'm sure its oil.

by the way it has the pressurized system and diaphragm.   I was surprised to see that as my lx 30 only has a pressurized system.  Also it has no duckbill valve and its just a little brass nozzle in the end.

LX30 IPL :

Looks like you are then missing #33 ....................................................the oil tank duck bill

I don't think so because it had a little nozzle in it and it looks like a pro made part. I doubt the previous homeowner was in there diagnosing that and replacing it 20 years ago. He would have had to be pretty technical since there was no forum back then and support was probably done by k-mart.

If those are like my XL2 then on other saw forums have told me this brass piece is actually sintered bronze and is porous. the duck bill allows quick pressurization fill of the oil tanks, yet the porous bronze allows a slow bleed down back to the crankcase. That reduces severe bar oiling after shut down.
You know what this is if you have an old Poulan microXXV. Of course poulan says to crack the oil cap prior to storage to release the pressure.

For this to work some of the bronze must not be covered by the hose or duck bill. Think I eventually saw this thing in a service book too.

Dave is right.  There's supposed to be a duckbill valve on the end of that porous bronze piece (or non-porous brass tube on some of the early saws).  Are you sure that you're not looking at the pickup line instead?  It has a screen filter on the end (if it hasn't fallen off of the line).  The SM makes mention of a 'restriction' that's also in the pickup line on some of the old saws.  Maybe that's the nozzle that you're referring to.

Looking at the tank, the line that goes into the top hole nearest the fill cap is the pressure line.  That's the one that should have the duckbill.  It goes to the fitting on the crankcase that's farthest away from the tank.  Use black synthetic rubber line on that one as it handles hot crankcase air and tygon will fail in that application.

The 90deg fitting highest on the crankcase (and closer to the tank) is what you attach the pickup line to.  This line goes through the other hole in the tank and has the pickup screen (and sometimes a 'restriction tube'.  The fitting closest to the tank is for the oil output line that goes to the fitting behind the bar pad.

If you mix up which fittings on the crankcase you attach the two tank lines to.................the saw WILL do the bug fogger thing like you described (and not oil the bar).  Pulled that move myself last month.  Went back in and switch the lines (after pulling the diaphragm cover and realizing my mistake).

Drained as much bar oil out of the engine as possible, reassembled it, and ran it.  Remaining oil burned off and the smoking went away.  Oiler works now too.  Now I need to go BACK into that saw yet again to change crank seals.  They take SKF 4913 oil seals, just like a Poulan Micro.  Buying the NOS seals on ebay is too expensive...

ok I just had to get back on this since 10 people replied with their input.

I took it apart again.. here is the pic and how I had it ..

is it backwards or is it going to be the stupid duckbill valve causing the problem.

the hoses were backwards but I still can't figure it out because the oiler has 2 nozzles and it isn't exactly marked in and out. I don't want to hook it up backwards again.  I assume the one coming form the crank should be going to the duckbill valve but I don't know where to go with the other one.

Crank-puls to inline oil-tank

outline oil-tank to blade mount

To be shore you can put a long hose on the inline an put a bit vacuum on it (that should hold / stay vacuum )

They were indeed wrong in the first photo.  Looking at that first photo, if you disconnected the two lines at the crankcase and switched them you'd be good to go.

The following refers to 'left' and 'right' as is seen in the two photographs above.  NOT talking about 'left' and 'right' as it pertains to the saw when held by the user...

Looking at the second pic, the fitting on the far left that comes straight out is what you connect the pressure hose (line that goes into the top tank hole, with duckbill valve) to.  Impulse signal goes through a passage from the crankcase into the pump diaphragm chamber.  That fitting you see in the pic directs impulse from the diaphragm chamber on to the pressure line that pressurizes the tank.

The 'top' 90-degree fitting is what you attach the oil pickup line to.  It feeds oil to the brass pump body (inside the crankcase casting).   Pulses in the diaphragm chamber push the diaphragm towards the pump chamber cover, and pulls the thin pump piston out of the pump body.  A spring on the cover side of the diaphragm pushes the diaphragm back towards the crankcase.  This forces the pump piston into the pump body, and forces oil out of the discharge fitting.

The bottom 90-degree fitting (aimed towards us in the pic) is the oil discharge from the pump.  Run a line from this fitting to the fitting behind the bar pad.

That's the correct routing for the later saws that do not have a diaphragm pump.  They only have the pressurized oil tank.  Earlier saws, such as the OP's and the one I'm working on instead have the more complicated line routing that I described in my last post.

Thanks dutch doctor but you missed the pics which show 3 nozzles.  Eccentric had it right. I had them mixed up and now it works fine.  It smoked for about a minute and now its running pretty good.

And that is the main thing you found it, great to hear it stopped smoking
