Title: SNAKESCOPE Borescope
Post by: William Greene on April 06, 2013, 11:03:09 am
with these new tilted cylinders on the 5 series HUSQVARNA saws, looking in the cylinder thru the smaller spark plug hole is now almost impossible.
The smaller spark plug is showing up on other HUSQVARNA equipment as well   :o

i'm now use'in' a snakescope, along with the new diagnostic software from HVA to keep track of service records!

here's a pic   ;)

I can think of a few times I could have used something like that.

Very Nice!  Thanks for the link.  Would have saved me a couple of hours on a 670 Champ Jonsered.  Piston was scored around the corner couldn't see it through ex. port.  Got so frustrated @ the time I didn't think to look through spark plug hole.

Went looking for one of these. Found two different models from harbor freight one for 89 and other 199. Wondering if anyone has tried the hf versions.

'Everybody' is selling one: Milwaukee, Ryobi, DeWalt, etc. On the shelf at Home Depot.

Worth your time to compare models if you are interested in this type of tool. Some let you look sideways (e.g. to inspect a cylinder wall. Some let you take/save photos. Some have detachable screens for easier positioning.  Some have better lighting. Etc., etc., etc.

I have looked at them through the years, but the models and specs keep changing.

I have been looking at home despot also. I noticed that some have camera diameters in the 5/8 range making them too large o get into the smaller plug holes. Some like the Milwaukee are only 3/8.

Post by: KilliansRedLeo on February 22, 2014, 11:00:03 am
Going to post some pictures that were taken with my new SnakeScope clone from Harbor Freight so may not be the best as I have not mastered its' use  yet but not a bad deal reg $249 on sale for $199 and a 25% off coupon gets it for $150. Big screen b/w and color .3 inch head (goes right down the plug hole) and also will go through the EP or IP and out the other side with adjustable light, pan and zoom. Pictures downloadable to computer or TV, as well as movie capability, and a micro SD card slot max 16 Gig. I have not tried but it may even fit beneath the piston at TDC and allow you to look at the crank. If the pictures don't come out well I will take some more.

This is something I might be interested in for work to help in making faster and better diagnosis.

This is something I might be interested in for work to help in making faster and better diagnosis.

That is why I purchased it. It is a little hard to get used to but I was able to take pictures of the cylinder walls without removeing anything but the muffler. Have not yet gotten a SD card for it but I figure that would only be necessary for movies. The sale runs til the end of Frbruary and the 25% off coupon works on it even though the thing is already on sale. It is product 60695. Roger go here to have a look:

Just wondering, do these things fit down the plug hole without having to remove the muffler?

The way I do it now is pull muffler to see intake side of cyl and pull plug to see exhaust side.  If it would fit down the spark plug hole could do it all quickly.

How bad do you want to see inside? fiberoptic bore scope  http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Vision-300-Fiberoptic-Borescope/dp/B000U07X6E

Inspect without opening it up to look at crankbearings, cranks, port timing etc.

It sure does, that is why it took me a long time to decide. the one that you found has a 5/8 inch head and will not fit down the plug hole. With a little messing about, you can actually get it under the piston when at TDC and have a look at the main bearings. It comes with a 90 degree mirror attachment that works pretty good.

In comparison the high-end SnakeScope that William Green uses is around 5-700$. I could not justify that much! There are a couple available from Home Cheapo but they also have 5/8 inch heads, I think Milwaukee makes them. I will stick it down a plug hole so that you can see what it does. Head is also water proof and comes with a small magnet and a hook for fishing your wife's wedding ring out of the garbage disposal. I purposely threw a  circlip down into a crankcase that I have to split and after some more messing about was able to retrieve it with the magnet.

The attached photographs are from my snakescope clone down through the plug hole they are left side transfers, right side transfers, intake port, and two of the EP. Only lighting was from the device internal lighting using the 90 degree mirror attachment.

I have looked at the Milwaukee and DeWalt ones now and then.  Always looked interesting for a number of applications.

What is the diameter of the head on the one you bought?

Thanks.

7.62mm 0.308 inches, 30 caliber. The ones I looked at from both of those vendors and IIRC the heads on them would not fit down a 14mm spark plug hole.

Milwaukee is showing a 9.5 mm head, and DeWalt a 9 mm head on some of their models.  But not at the price you got that one for!

Years ago I had to borrow one from Olympus for project in a plant.  $10,000.

Cool, that should fit! The way I figure it I could buy three of these for the cost of the name brands, and as technology moves forward it will get cheaper. Just like your $10K Olympus!

For some reason I do not think I will see bell bottoms here in Wyoming.    Their hats might get taller or the brim might change but that is about it.

Does it plug into a USB port of a computer, camera?  Do you need an adapter or program to work?  Thk

It plugs into a USB2 port on your computer.

It requires Photo Both type software for simple USB cameras

There's a CD that comes with it but the literature was rather vague about exactly what's on the CD

I run Linux and there's a program called "Cheese" that'll run the camera.
