Title: MS250 & 026
Post by: Vance in AK on April 22, 2013, 06:44:34 pm
I just pickedup an MS250 on Cl for $50.  Haven't seen it yet but it looks clean.  Owner says saw shop said hole in piston & he knows nothing else.  he got it from a friend...  20" bar & chain looks good in pic.
At the price I'll try & fix & sell it, but if I run into other problems &it's not worth it whatparts might work on my 026?

Are the MS250s a decent little saw?

There's a two port and a four port 025?  I have a late model 025 that is just like new. Sounds like it has been muffler modded. It is my smallest saw and is not for sale.

I also have a ported 026 PRO with a 3/8 X 16" bar. It is a nice limb saw too. Watch it about not getting the exhaust too high.

I'm sure yours are worth fixing up.

Thanks 660.  Just for the record, my 026 is a great runner.  Just wondering what parts might work for spares.  i'm guessing not many (if any).

I've never worked much on my saws. I bought them as they are a couple years ago and other than looking at and using them, I don't know much about those two models.

I changed the carb to a new twin needle one on the 025 and the 026 bar was changed from 20" X .325 X .063 to 16" X 3/8" X .050

I had to set the coil clearance on the 026 as it was rubbing on the flywheel. The 026 PRO already had a twin needle carb.

About the only thing common on the two saws is the spark plug.

Sounds like it has been muffler modded.

What makes you think that? Because of a hole in the piston?

20" bar & chain............whatparts might work on my 026?

Max bar length on that saw should not exceed 16" IMO.
18" on a good day.

Parts compatibility with an 026..........the spark plug

Sounds like it has been muffler modded.

What makes you think that? Because of a hole in the piston?

With the 025, the hole in the muffler body behind the deflector plate has been enlarged to cover the entire recessed area under the deflector. The deflector outlets have been bent out to open them with a big screw driver. In a buried cut on pine, it sets the bark on fire. Also the deflector inside the muffler has had the holes enlarged. The 025 is loud and runs good. Nothing stuffy about it.

This 025 ran rich enough to four cycle even with the muffler mod with the original single needle carb but I changed it to a new twin needle carb before doing any cutting with it. The new carbs were cheap from Stihl at somewhere around $23.

My 026 has had the muffler opened up also to go along with the ported cylinder. It has been done much like the 025 muffler and is also loud.

I still don't see how you arrive at that conclusion based on the original post?
Are you PMing with the OP? Something isn't adding up here.
Heck, I don't even know how you can tell its been MM'd from the original post.

I'm sorry to mislead you. I know nothing about the original poster's MS250. I've just been blowing about my own 025.

I do not know what your talking about but it was easy to understand that 660magnum was talking about his own saws not the OP's.    Thanks for the tip on the spark plug for parts that will swap.

I love a fun post!!! :D

Thanks guys.
Things are a little strange with the saw & original story.  Got it home & it actually feels like it has pretty fair compression.  Haven't stuck a guage on it.  Saw looks nice.  I assumed it was straight gassed but no idea really.  pulled the muffler & plug & what I can see doesn't look bad.  Little irregularity in top edge of piston right at exhaust port.  Never messed with clamshell saws before so I'm not sure how far I'll go on it.  Need to stick comp guage on it & go from there.
Turned out to be 18" b&c but in good shape.
Should be able to part it out & get my money back I would think...

Run it you might like just the way it is.   Also here is your chance to learn all about clamshell crankcases.
Lots of options.

The 250 is the largest displacement of that series of Stihl Chainsaws.

At the purchase of the later Stihl 025 I have, I thought it was cute, and clean, and showed interest but after examining it, I saw that it was a clamshell saw. After pulling on the cord, I bought it.

Not having much hope for high Stihl performance from it, at home I started it up and made a couple cuts and was pleasantly delighted that it had a proper mixture in spite of the muffler mod and single needle carb and how well it cut. It had a yellow chain.

I read a little about them and reviewed IPL's and pulled the muffler on mine and saw that it was a four port one like a 250.

My 025 is a .325 X 16" one.

Some are 3/8LP.

Some are 18".

The bar is a different mount than the 026/260 and most have spur sprockets.

Except for putting a new twin needle carb on it, I have changed nothing on it since purchasing it from a fellow Chainsaw Repair member.

He ran it back in the winter in a comparison with a 40cc chainsaw and there was no comparison, the Stihl 025 run off and left the 40cc chainsaw in the dust.

Well I'm not so certain it's just the plug .Fact about a week or two ago I dug through a box of parts and lo and behold the clutch cover from an 025 fit right on an 034 Super I'm going to rebuild .Thermo plastic but  it will work for the time being .
Now that's a deal .Once I was on the lookout for a clutch cover for an 038 mag .They wanted a tad bit for them on flea .bay .I got an 024 cover which is the same thing for half the money
