Title: What is this Mac?
Post by: HMLT360Pro on May 23, 2013, 06:57:57 am
I was looking at this Mac today, and I didn't know what it was? Is it worth buying? Collectible? Can anyone help? Thanks in advance!

I looks like a 250 which is not rare .I've got three and two were freebies if that tells you anything .

They have plenty of power but they are heavy .Tough old things most made in the 60's and likely could last another 40 years .

During their popularity they were in direct compitition to the Homelite C 5 and C7 saws .Some years later that compitition was the Homelite Xl-12 and the Mac 10-10 as the saws went to lighter weight  designs .

Could it be a 1-43? Wasn't the 1-43 right before the 250? I have 1 of each that run but I don't recall the differences

Some great historic info, THANKS  ( both did not survive as a independent  company )

both mcculloch and homelite had multiple chances to survive long before falling apart.. but their 'old school' thinking doomed them. they didn't want to spend any cash on research or development. even when the out sourced companies they were using to build some of their more advanced saws were screaming at them to do so. oleo-mac told mcculloch right from the get go that the titan line although far more advanced and user freindly, were outdated designs. mcculloch decided to keep what they had in hopes their customers would stick with them due to brand loyalty. homelite was basicly told the same thing by solo, but with less of the research and development talk. they were told 'hey don't worry! we'll keep you running." but they never thought that people wanted a lighter faster chainsaw, nor that the early epa would start clamping down on "polution" be it gasses or sound. they were both blinded like deer in headlights not really knowing what their customer really wanted because they really didn't care.

That's pretty much how it went which is too bad .Couple others did that same mistake ,Harley D for example .

With the older Homeys and Macs it's not the fact they aren't good cutters but more so they aren't user friendly with regards to ergonomics etc .They are a hoot to run but even being a small time collector I don't care to run them for long periods of time ,tank full rarely .

Now once in a blue moon a giant of a tree crops up to warrent the use of the over 100cc saws but that is very rare that happens in this neck of the woods .

???I can not remember what model this was 30+ years ago. It was a big old Mac, that  was given to me. I must have been 13+-, this was my first saw. I went wood cutting it was scary fast!!! :o It had a 42+ in bar on . Put her into the wood and pin the throttle!! I remember the vibration - the smoke before it cleared its self!!! :o I remember the weight- just to get it on top of the log! I also recall how much fuel it would burn!!! Also the manual oil!! :-\ I bet this saw was worth the bucks!! :( Just can't remember... ??? Thanks for listening!!

They load up when idling .Which causes the puff of smoke .Just the way they are .

I've got an old 650 gear drive that will blow black smoke like it's burning soft coal and is slow on the throttle up .Once it clears the fuel in the crankcase it sounds like it has a super charger on it .It has surprised a great number of people including myelf .That's another one you wouldn't care to run all day because it weighs as much as an 090 Stihl .

It doesn't make much difference of the model because of the same displacement and design they all run about the same .If it was direct drive with a 42" bar most likely it was over 100 cc.Which could be number of them .

I got a kick out of it too. Saw a Mac 15 in that lot, first saw I operated and worked on, spent more time getting that cussed thing started than we did cutting. Dad finally threw in the towel and gave it away. ;D

Came across this today.  Al running his Mac?  What is it?

2007 Indiana road trip me and Al made in his little ranger pick up filled to the brem with chainsaws in the bed.

That is the SP 125 I put a cast iron liner in .I don't think I have ran that thing since that photo was taken.

Ha 14-15 saws in a Ranger with a bad transmission .Well the old gal did die about two years after that .$225 bucks and I drove it for 5 years .Still got the tires on the Ranger I own today .
