Title: 024 Super Piston, cylinder, and chain
Post by: 94BULLITT on May 28, 2013, 01:17:23 pm
I have a 024S that needs a piston and cylinder. I think I am down to 3 options.

1.Meteor 44mm Kit

2.Hyway 44.7mm Kit

3.Used MS260 44.7mm cylinder, which seem to be hard to find at a fair price and use a Meteor piston.

What would be the best way for me to go?

I also need a chain for this saw. I am going to be using this saw for small stuff, like limbing.

I wouldnt get so hung up on the 44.7mm oem v/s 44mm oem.  I found a used like new 44mm set on the last 026 I did and you wont notice a difference.  Your 024 super should be 44mm anyways.

Speaking of which I just send one out today to a very happy owner .All it was was a funky carb and a 6 dollar fix plus a case of beer for the mechanic --me .

Would you believe the dealer told him the freakin saw was cooked ,Why that thing has a cleaner  P and C than the one I own .

Personally on that piston deal just stay with OEM size .An RCH more won't get you that much more .

They are a neat little saw but they aren't oak slayers .--oak limb slayers . ;D

What are you running?  DL gage etc?

Thanks for the replies.

Option #3  ;)

I think I might hold out a little while and see what I can find, no need to get in a rush.
I wouldnt get so hung up on the 44.7mm oem v/s 44mm oem.  I found a used like new 44mm set on the last 026 I did and you wont notice a difference.  Your 024 super should be 44mm anyways.

Here is what I have found, I guess it is right.

024: 42mm bore, 30mm stroke, 41.6 cc
024S: 42mm bore, 32mm stroke, 44.3 cc
026: 44mm bore, 32mm stroke, 48.7 cc
MS260: 44.7bore, 32mm stroke, 50.2cc

So if I go from the 026 to MS260 I would gain a whopping 1.5cc, I never payed much attention to that. The MS261 is 3.75hp. I have seen were people say a 026 is 3.2 or 3.5. I have a 4 year old stihl catalog and the MS260 is 3.2 Where is the power coming from on the MS261?

44mm meteor piston http://northwoodsaw.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1384 . I'm not seeing a 44.7mm meteor  piston.
Meteor lists a 44.7 piston, 5th from the bottom.
http://www.meteorpiston.com/Lists/Gardening/Catalog.aspx (http://www.meteorpiston.com/Lists/Gardening/Catalog.aspx)

used oem 44mm $60 and ship  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stihl-MS-260-MAHLE-Cylinder-Head-Jug-Piston-Kit-44-mm-OEM-MS260-026-1121-/200928425883?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ec844779b

I looked at that one the other night, now I am giving the 44mm bore some more thought.

oem new 44.7mm kit $160 and ship  http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-OEM-STIHL-Chainsaw-44-7mm-Piston-Cylinder-026-MS-260-PRO-MS260-1121-020-1215-/350546037134?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item519e2c098e

I saw that one also. I think I would go over budget if I bought that one. I wonder if he would do any better on the price, he has 3.

used possible 44.7mm off 260 you need to ask.  $80   http://www.ebay.com/itm/stihl-oem-ms260-026-cylinder-and-piston-top-end-/230980503511?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35c782c7d7

They are a neat little saw but they aren't oak slayers .--oak limb slayers . ;D

I am only going to be using it on limbs. I want something that has some power for bigger stuff.

Also another question for you guys, Do I need a ring compressor or is there something else I could use? I have ring compressors but nothing that small.

I also need a chain for this saw. I am going to be using this saw for small stuff, like limbing.

What are you running?  DL gage etc?

16" bar
67 DL
.325 Pitch
.063 gauge

I like this one over the stihl version.   http://northwoodsaw.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=398

Can use your fingers,  tie strap, pop can cut up etc.

Chain I would get a stihl RSC for your needs.

Do you know what caused the other top end to get smoked?

Better fix that before throwing another top end on it if seals etc.

I'll try that for the ring compressor.

I don't see a RSC on stihls website anymore. That is what is on the 660.

Yes I do. The previous owner was having problems with the saw not running right. His buddy took the card apart and it was dirty. He ran it a while and had the same problem. So he cleaned the carb and got a new gas can. He went to cut firewood and grabbed the wrong gas can, the one with regular gas in it. He bought a new 290 to replace this saw. The rings busted in it and wasted the cylinder.

I just wanted to give you guys a update. I ordered the Hyway 44.7 kit off amazon from weed eater man. The shipping was cheaper that way. I did not order a gasket set. I think I am going to make my own cylinder base gasket. Does anyone know of some good links on modding the muffler? Thanks for everyone's help so far.

I got the piston and cylinder today. It looks good. It also came with a set of gaskets and seals. I wish the listing would have said that because I ordered a set of gaskets and seals already. I'll post some pics of it later.

skirt width, overall length, height of rings etc. a side by side comparison pic just to see if there is any small differences. :)

Here is a picture. I hope it is good enough. The new piston has a shorter skirt so the wrist pins are not setting at the same level.

The difference in skirt height seems considerable. I'd make sure it doesnt free port before doing a complete assy

i thought the skirt was a little short from the first pic.
i notice short skirts. especially when they're real short ;D
on a serious note, i would really make sure it doesn't free port. the cylinder looks quite good (on the outside anyway ;)), maybe it might be worth it to get another piston. check for free port first.

Post by: 94BULLITT on June 02, 2013, 09:35:15 pm
I'll check for free porting before I assemble it. I stuck the piston on the rod with out ring and put the jug on it to make sure it would turn over.

Here is a better picture of the pistons. I have them connected by the wrist pin. It does not free port.

Skirt is a little shorter which in theory would open the intact lower in the up stroke .However that's relative to the cylinder port .It might not change it a bit .

Actually you wouldn't know unless you had the stock numbers then checked this set up with a wheel to compare. If it runs okay I wouldn't be concerned about it .

I ran the saw a little today. It does not have the power I think it should. Maybe I am expecting too much from it. I checked the compression and it only has 120#s cold. should it have more?

You need some Caber rings
Title: Re: 024 Super Piston, cylinder, and chain
Post by: Al Smith on June 05, 2013, 09:15:45 pm
Run the snot out of it .It should seat in the rings and the comp should go up .

FWIW it took me the best part of one summer to get the rings seated on an 038 Mag  I rebuilt .Simpley because I was cutting down from a 10 cord pile of oak at 10-15 minutes run time at a time .Now once those rings seated the improvement was dramatic .
