Title: Stihl 048AV
Post by: Old Iron Logging on June 19, 2013, 07:59:20 pm
I was given a nice 048 yesterday. I have tried for the last 10 years to either buy it or trade for it with no luck. Owner came for a visit yesterday and before he left he said he that he had something for me in the car. He passed me the 048. Nice gift.

I have two of them as a matter of fact .One has a bad seal which I have just haven't taken the time to replace it .Another needs rings, again no time .

For their age they have plenty of power .Reported case leakers but most who have them don't report any .Very early model were assembled with slotted screws or at least the 042 was which probabley caused some  leaks .

Suppossedly originally made for the US Forest service which might just be a rumor .Also at the time supposedly the highest HP to weight ratio of any saw made during that time period .

Parts are getting hard to find especially flocked air filters and clutch side seals .

I was given one a few yrs back. quite impressive I thought Looks like a transition saw, when they were phasing out the cast with plastic, heavy bugger. Anyone have a way of finding the dates of manufacture & how many , thanks folks. :)

The 048 was introduced in 1978 leading up to the 028/ 038 series. My first year 038AV from 1980 had the metal fuel tank.

A mix up I meant to say 028AV in 1978-'79 , the 048 came with the 038 in 1980.
But looking at acres site the 028AV was introduced in 1977 ???

It's good to share some history. Going back to my old 1970s Chainsaw Age magazines it was the 042 AV that I mistaken the 048 for. The 042 introduced in 1977 had the same gas / oil caps side by side and the same big sloping top cover. This saw had the first Stihl master control switch.
I'll scan and  post  the page here later, gotta get off to work :o

Thanks for posting that 660,
Last summer Ken Morrison sent me almost the complete 10 years of 1970s monthly issues of Chainsaw Age,  and he is setting up to send me the 60 or so issues that I'm missing from the 1980s. I also got  12 - 1960 issues from Chainsaw Lady in Indiana. I'm still looking for more.
ChainSaw Age is a powerful powder keg of information.

Bought my first 028 in 1982 with my first pay cheque. Dad had a 038 in 1980. The 048 I have now, he used sometime in early 1980's.
