Saw one on the local CL type listing & called. Guy claims it's near new & wants $200 for it. 24" bar.
I don't have a local dealer to go talk to so I'm not sure they are even a current saw. He claims it's less than a year old & low hours (only a "few"). I haven't gone to see it yet. I have an old 670 that I like but it's the only Jonsered I've ever messed with.
-
stop asking questions and go get it :)
very good saw. similar saw as the husky 359. but prettier ;D
-
They were one of my favorite saws in my logging days. Have a ported one that I will never part with. Heated handle version.
I liked the power curve of the 2159 over the 357/2156 version. Used the 357/2156 for spruce but in hardwood stands it was the 2159 all the way.
With a stock 2159 I could cut a 12 cord load on 5 tanks. Only other saw that I could do that with was a 2063.
-
Like they said husky 359 = jonsered 2159. Cylinder if I remember has removal transfer covers too. Basically a bigger bore cylinder on a 357xp crankcase.
$200 is a good buy here, so up your way it a super deal IMO.

Something I was wondering Jonsered CS 2159C with green gas cap. Does it have a CAT muffler or something?
-
if it has the green cap, it should have the cat.
-
Even the original Husky and Johnny Red "59's" with the exterior transfer covers can be made to really run with the right port job.
-
The age can be determined by the serial number.
-
Thanks for the input guys.
I ended up getting the saw. Not sure of the real story behind it. The guy I got it from is kind of a professional garage seller& claims he bought it from a friend who was moving... Maybe but ???
Anyway, it is in excellent shape. Most of the wear it shows is paint wear on the bottom of the chassis & a rub mark on one side. Looks like it probably spent most of it'd time riding in someone's rig. The chain is about 20% & he claims it's the original chain. Bar is the Jonsered bar & paint is 90%+ so I believe it. Only damage I could find is one of the plastic clips that holds the aircleaner cover down is broken. Started & ran sweet.
Serial #on sticker is BHVXS.059EA
Labeled CS2159C Ulitcor
Green fuel cap.
Any idea on yr of manf?
Any good/bad traits to these saws? Easy mods (muffler etc)?
Thanks for the help! I think I will enjoy it ;)

Get rid of the catalytic converter one way or the other . . . Cut the reactor out or maybe a new aftermarket muffler? This saves weight for the reactors are heavy as lead.
Some early Husqvarna ones had a automatic compression release that was a trouble magnet.
Make sure it doesn't have a plastic clamp on the intake boot at the cylinder?
-
for the price of and after market muffler, i'd just switch it out, and add an extra port. big wake up for that saw.

That's not the serial number. The number plate is a black metal one - to find it, remove the clutch cover, and look to the rear of it, partially under the rear part of the handlebar on that side of the saw.
As others said, get rid of the cat muffler if it hasn't been changed out already.

I'm suffering from sellers remorse. A ported 359/2159 are surprisingly strong saws but a well done 562 is head and shoulders above it Like they said husky 359 = jonsered 2159. Cylinder if I remember has removal transfer covers too. Basically a bigger bore cylinder on a 357xp crankcase.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think a 359 has a 357 crankcase. I remember Ed putting a 359 jug on a 357 saw for KFtree and they were calling it a 358.
The 357 has a smaller crankcase and stuffers I believe.
End result was not much gain. This was about 2005 so my memory is foggy.
Excellent saw ported, I found them doggy in stock form and not very impressive, but for $200 I'd buy.

Thanks Troll. My 670 has the data plate in plain sight. Wonder why they took to hiding them? I will get the #.
As for the muffler, where is the best place for a non-cat replacement? Can these (mufflers) be modded?

The case is the same, it is the crank stuffers on the 357xp crank that make the difference in case volume.

Yep thats the difference crank stuffers only, that I know and or aware of. Crankcases are the same.
Stuffers are only $12 apiece new and snap in place I think. ???

OK, got the serial #.
2011 1900083
So I assume yr of manf 2011?
660mag mentioned removing the cat from the muffler. What's involved in this? How much performance increase do you see?
This will be primarily a firewood saw. I love my 026 but I like a little more bar (it's 20"). I need to stick a chain on the 2159 before I get serious, but it sure balances nice with the 24" bar. Think I'm going to like it, just wish we had a local dealer. Closest one I know of is almost 200 miles away.

This is OEM http://www.baileysonline.com/itemdetail.asp?item=HVP+504+70+64+01&catID=

Unfortunately most of the aftermarket mufflers for the 357/359 have a single pipe outlet and are made like the European version of the muffler.
To remove the catalytic reactor involves grinding the seam off the muffler to separate the halves and then you have to knock the reactor out of the interior baffle. When you are done you have to weld the muffler back together.
A new non-cat OEM muffler is expensive. A good used one may be an alternative but I didn't see any on Ebay? you might check with Chainsawr or Sawagain
-
chainsawr had a used one for 19 not pretty
-
If the 357 is done like the 353 CAT muffler. I know how I did it.
(((((This e-tech muffler is the worst breating thing I have seen on these saws.
Has a baffle with pin size holes about 3/4 way all the way across. With a tube running from front of baffle back to rear portion and up to the exhaust oulet.
I'm thinking of trying to go in and open baffle and cut the tube without splitting muffler.
Got the muffler open up. Drill through the baffle CAT plate everywhere and pulled about 3/4 of the tube out that ran from top to baffle area. So mostly all the tube is gone but at the top where it exits now.))))))
Never did do the dual port with husky deflector yet. Guy trying to trade me out of 353 dont like louder mufflers. So in what and see mode on 353.

2011 week 19 - but that is of course the production dating, and not when it was sold to the original owner.
This means that the only issue you have to fix is the cat muffler - and of course you want a proper colored fuel cap as well (gray/black, not green)! ;D
-
Thanks Troll. Always nice to have a b-day to celebrate!
Thanks for the advice on muffler mods guys. I'll take any ideas you have. I want to slap a new chain on it tomorrow & see how it does.
-
Well stuck a new chain on it & played with it for just a few minutes today & it seems to run great! Cuts nice. Just cut a few firewood rounds of spruce about 16" to try it.

??? The numbers are in plain wiew there, so I don't understand why you don't see them (503 97 00-01 and 503 97 00-02)?

Yeah Jack what Niko said. Both numbers are in plain view.
Wait a minute how old are you now. ;) Glasses Jack glasses.
