My first "official" post here.
I bought a project saw. It is an 034 that was missign some parts, needed some additional parts and just plain needed gone through. It was missing bolts, starter assembly, throttle linkage, broken throttle trigger, bare kill switch wires, terribly crappy air filter, oil fill cap, etc. I am sure it needs the carb rebuilt and all new lines. Hence, the question lower in the post.
It has a good piston as seen through the exhaust port and appears to have good compression, but as you can see it is FAR from a beauty queen. It did come with a spare cyclinder (out of 036 -48mm), but it has some transfer, but it will likely clean up. I have sourced some used parts from chainsawr and some from the local stihl dealer. but i still have more to go as the allowance permits with out impacting the beer money! : )

SOOOO, has anyone ever run one of these kits from Hutzl on eBay?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/281051399831?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D281051399831%26_rdc%3D1 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/281051399831?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D281051399831%26_rdc%3D1)
The kit kit comes with an air and fuel filter, fuel line, impulse line spark plug, decomp valve and pull hande.
For $16, it is tempting just for the air filter. I need 5 of the seven peices listed, but am a little gun shy on the Hong Kong origin... Hutzl is the brand
If you have purchased this or similar kits, what was the quality and would you buy it again? I probably already know the answer, but i am asking. With the price of it, it is extremely tempting to at least try it.
-
Hey Welcome to the site.
For $16 I would have to try one out myself. Heck I paid $10 for a AFM de-comp.
I give people 3 choices when I repair or rebuild saws. Redneck reusing and cleaning up old parts when usable with cost in mind using AFM to keep cost down, aftermarket and oem.
I would be interested in trying out these kits myself or if someone gives me the ok to use the aftermarket stuff on their saw.
I have used AFM seals with good results (heard some bad stories too). Have used gaskets, rings, de-comps, air filters etc.
-
Just so you know. Sometimes Northwood Saw carries the aftermarket stuff you are looking for, but already here in US. http://www.northwoodsaw.com/store/
-
The only reason i would not use it is due to potential failure due to air leak. Where are three of the about 6 places a saw can leak air.... impulse and fuel line and the air filter. Those are the three main pieces that i would use from this kit I would hate to put the money i am putting into this jsut to cheap out on three of the parts that can effectively kill this saw by creating lean running condition.
-
on the 034, i am seeing two different fuel line configurations:
http://northwoodsaw.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=249
http://northwoodsaw.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=248
Is one for an earlier 034 or what?
thabnks for the link, those are decent prices compared to my local shop.

I got a redneck fix so I dont have to run stihl fuel line and filters.
http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/stihl/stihl-ms250-quick-fuel-line-fix/msg5071/#msg5071
-
I used used small diameter fuel line for the impulse line on my MS 250, but wouldn't have thought about thise for the fuel situation. Must need to find fuel line with the OD the same as the ID of the previous line +/-?
-
What is the redneck repair for the kill switch wire on the 034 when the insulation is completely gone? Dealer wants $12 for the two wires...totaling about a foot long!
-
I use shrink wrap from HF on bare wires. Hair dryer shrunk it right down on the wire tight.
-
i found the best place for good quality heat shrink is a good hobby store. most of the time they have more choices of size, length, colors, firmness and thicknesses than any other place that carries heat shrink tubing.
here's 1 online hobby place to look:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0095p?FVPROFIL=&FVSEARCH=HEAT+SHRINK++tubing+&search=Go
although they don't have the long lengths, most repairs can be covered from what they do have.
-
The heat shrink I bought comes in long rolls and you cut to length. I'll look to make sure and correct if needed.
-
scroll down for look at rolls of shrink wrap tubing . http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=shrink+wrap+tubing
-
that's exactly like the stuff we can get at princess auto (their web site sucks imo). i sometimes find it too thin for some repairs and need to double it up. i know at leading edge hobbies they have 2'-3' foot rolls in various diameters, thickness and heat parameters (different temps to shrink the tubing). i like the thicker tubing as you can put it and the wire into a shape, shrink the tubing and they will stay in that shape. really good on some kill switches ;)
-
i will remember that. That would be good for trailer wiring as well.
-
I have never had any problems with aftermarket fuel and impulse lines/intake boots i use a lot of them. You hear a lot of storys about problems with top ends i dont seem to have any trouble. Most of my personal saws have aftermarket top ends, fuel lines etc. and they run almost daily
The only problem i have had was a golf piston had an indexing pin come out. I will say dont buy aftermarket husky kill switches they are total junk

Anyone know above? I dont know the stihl that well to know either.
-
pop the fuel cap open and see what line you have. either curved or straight. i think they will interchange if the opening for the line is the same size.
-
The newer tank style has a larger fuel line opening and uses the S shaped line, the older tank uses the straight line. The new tanks started on saw serial number X 39 108 850. "X" is the country of manufacture, will probable be 1 (Germany) or 2 (USA).
-
I have one of these 034AV units that should hate me by now but I can't kill it.. The power to weight ratio is pretty impressive.
( Made in West Germany )

Thanks......................................................
-
Thanks for the reply. I will check the serial number of the tank to see. The idea of looking to see which line is on it is good, but just because what is on it, does not mean it is the one that should be on it. The saw has def seen better days, but the piston looks good, so i think there is still life left in it.
Once i get a chance, meaning once i get a chance in the daylight (as the mosquitos are terrible here) to work on it i will know better about what is going on with it. I know i need the following yet:
air filter
clutch drum with rim and needle bearing - anyone use the oregon drum kit?
fuel line
impulse line
spark plug
Zama RB-31 (number from memory, never a good plan) rebuild kit
18" B&C
Then i need to decide if i am going to try a restore to near new or keep it a ratty ride. If the fomer, i need a new clutch cover and air filter cover and some painting skills. If ratty ride, that should do it for parts. I will likely chose a happy medium on the restore. Not near new, but presentable/sellable.
-
I use oregon drums on different saws with good results.

I assumed that was the case, they look to be built pretty well and the price is right for them.
I should have been working on this saw las friday, instead is was out playing with this one:

First chance to put some real trigger time since i purchased this MS 440... i still think i stole the thing for $200
-
Still have some work to do though! Two more rows look just like this one. Buddy is clear about 10 acres and is taking the trees down with a track hoe and lining them up.

What post and watcha on LOL I can check for any deleted post. That would just confirm your crazy though.

Nope nothing, = your tripping on something maaaaan.
-

Yep, as nice as that thing is it would have probably brought $550 on ebay. Great score, and hope it serves you many years.
-
I would have flipped it for $400 local. Thats why I couldnt justify in mind driving just over 2hrs total on my time, plus my gas cost. My time is very important to me.
-
I called within an hour of it listed in on CL and by time I got there three others had called wanting it.

LOL........that's what I thought

I worked a little my 034. Attached missing parts, replaced worn electrical parts. Tossed a shot of mix down the throat and it fired first pull. Still need to go through the carb andvreplace rubber parts, but happy it fired.
-
Always nice to have a plan come together ;) Good job on gettin it runnin again.

Are you a new daddy yet ?
-
It will be disassembled a good bit to take off years of crud, but at least I know it wants to run. I was really trying to see if it would even pop and it took off. FYI, that never happens for me.

Yes sir!!! Healthy baby girl (#2). Hard to ask for a better baby. She was a month old yesterday.
Thanks for asking!

My wife doesn't nag about my hobbies and gives me a lot of freedom, but I also know my limits and when she needs help. Right now she needs help with a 4 yo and a newborn. Plus they are only young once and boy they grow quick. My 4 yo is some much fun and such a sweet loving little girl. I hope the second turns out the same.
I will make a gtg sometime, but right now isn't the time.

it is also in my signiture This is probably going to be my last one i like helping out the fire dept but it is too much work and expense. It is usualy the better part of a day felling the logs and another skidding and hauling to the fire dept the night before. Then another trip hauling the skidsteer over then cleaning up and hauling the wood away after it is over.(if you leave anything it wont be there the next day) It was 2 am when i got home from the last one. I am done ranting now BILL

What is the best way to remove a fly wheel from an 034 without the Stihl puller. I have access to a standard puller if that helps. There are for holes in the FW but they don't look threaded but may be.
-
Also, when restoring revamping saws, what is the best way to rehab a mag clutch cover? Buy a new one? :)
Mine has some paint scaled off and the magnesium seems oxidized. Almost bubbled like rust...
-
I was hoping someone else could tell yea. I have both removers. 1 stihl for poly 660 and big saws and the other homemade by Al Smith for the smaller saws 026-066. So never removed a stihl the way I remove the others.
-
I tried giving it a whack with a punch and a hammer, but didn't get too burly with it. That didn't work. it is soaking with wd-40 right now with a second go round in its future this evening with the punch and hammer.

do you have picture of this puller?
-
I can get you one and Al can explain how he made the one from fittings of some kind.
PB blaster behind fly and front then soak over nite has worked best for me on the most stubborn flys.

I don't think the clutch covers are mag. Pretty sure they are alum.

It may be, never really seen al oxidize like this, so i assumed it was mag or some other metal.
-
Magnesium will suffer the WHITE DEATH and turn to powder.
-
Al made the 1 on right 026-066. 1 on left is 084 and poly 660 and also found it fit 166.

From a little search. Looks like a 22 mm reducing nipple with a bolt run through it.... now to find a metric nipple around these parts. Auto parts store sent me to a hydraulics shop in town... now to figure out when they are open. Might throw a caliper on the inner few thread to make sure it is 22 mm.
-
Fwiw, the hydraulic supply is beside the still shop. So worst case I get the original equipment.
-
I bought this puller a couple of years ago. Both 26mm x 1.5 and 22mm x 1.5 fit most internal thread flywheels.
