Title: 029 Super
Post by: davbell22602 on August 05, 2013, 08:22:50 pm
Traded my poulan 2250 for this on even trade. This runs but leaks gas around fuel line on tank.

Is there something broke cause the engine cover wont stay down all the way on the recoil side of the saw.

Looks to me like something isn't lined up right more than broken. When you say leaks gas do you mean needs a fuel line or ****?

I think its the fuel line. It was soaked in gas when I shut it off. Plus it was leak down the side on the outside of the tank. PO said it would bogg down and shut off. I dumped his rotten gas and put 50:1 tru fuel and had no troubles keeping it running til the gas leak.

Gotcha. Looks to me like the top cover just has an alignment issue.

Looks like the top cover is part of the lower trigger handle.

It is. I have one apart right now so I snapped a pic for ya. The rear handle is molded together with the top cover.

Ummmm, I wonder where the alignment issue would be at then?

I have a 029 super and it is a good saw that just works.  It kept my family warm for about five years and I bought it second hand.  I have done nothing to it other than add fuel and oil.  Still starts when asked to and will make chips with a sharp chain.  It won't set any speed records but it will cut just about anything you ask of it.   Until this last year when the firewood was all bigger stuff, i never realized it was anything but adequate.   30" made me see the light that the 029 super was slow....  but it still performed the job asked of it.

I hope you get it running and it serves you as well as mine has me.

Not sure what it could be. Spark plug wire maybe. AV mount out of wack. Hard to tell without having it here in front of me.

I was thinking a mounting bushing when I first saw it. Maybe I can fix by loosening up a bunch screws without removing alot of parts.

Its the tank vent line thats leaking gas not the fuel line. Also missing the prefilter too. All the rubber mounts are there. Just thinking if the sun warped the housing by any chance. It does look like the sun faded it a little bit.

I am out of ideas. If it runs well, then just run it if it doesn't bother you.  :)

I just dont wanna ruin it if its something that needs taken care of before using it. It runs. Just gotta fix that fuel leak first is all.

Yeah, i meant after you fix the fuel line. You said you didn't want to take it apart, therefore after you get you a new tank vent, if the cover issue doesn't make it run wrong then just run it. If the cover issue bothers you, your probably gonna have to take it apart to see why it is the way it is.   ;)

how does the intake boot sit with the top like that? i'd be worried about it stretching.

Show a pic of the right side around the 2 a/v mounts, and one of the bottom, so we can see that bottom av mount,
thanks

Yahh,
glad to be here!!!

It seems my 12 year stretch on that "Other Forum" has ended, so I am doomed to wander the internet.....

Here is a couple of snaps of a new one that I am dis-membering.  It looks like you could use a couple of av mt plugs, and you might
pop the other ones out and inspect and reset the rubber.
Title: Re: 029 Super
Post by: Fish on August 07, 2013, 12:12:18 pm
Yeah, if you reset those mts, it would likely help your alignment issue, and if you need any plugs, I've got hundreds...

Post by: davbell22602 on August 07, 2013, 05:53:33 pm
No luck in resetting the plugs. The one by the chain brake has no screw in it. The others wont tighten up but will stay in the hole.

Clarify...

The ones in the black handle, the screws won't tighten?

What about the ones with no expansion plug, have you tried getting them replaced?

Yes the ones in the black handle and no expansion plug wont tighten up. There not loose loose. Just wont tighten all the way up. The one by the muffler has no screw in it.

nah, the one above the bar/chain is held with 2 plugs, one on each side.  But if they are worn and sloppy, you may need to replace
some of that stuff....

OK, I'll replace them all and hope to solve this while doing that. Missing plugs too.

Don't buy them from Stihl, that would be way too expensive, I think I still have a couple complete sets in my E-Bay store.

Do have the tank vent also?

Scratch my private message, I just woke up, the mounts and plugs for 8.50 shipped is fine.  I also said that the newer vents I have are different, and he mentioned needing a vent for his 026 as well, so he may put up a pic of what he needs here, as 026 had a few
different vent setups.

Heres the part number for the 029 vent. 1117-350-5800. I'll put up a pic in 026 piston cylinder post for the 026 pro.

How compression is this supposed to have? I think this one is due for new piston and rings. I ran it yesterday sound like rpms/power arent all there unless its crank bearing. It had low tone sound when squeezing the trigger.

Compression tested at 90-100psi

I haven't tested my 029 super, but that sounds pretty low to me.  I would have guessed 140 - 160...

I think found the problem anyways. Clogged spark arrester screen. Removed screen and rpms seem like there back to normal now.
