That is very clean considering it's age. Sure has not seen much use.

I was visiting a friend at his lake house on Catawba and we walked over to have a beer with the old timer next door.  We were out in his shop and there sat one of the prettiest 031's. Damn near looked like it should have been on the show room shelf... still kick myself for not inquiring about it.

Nice looking saw!

Dont that beat all. The guy that bought the 031 came back 24hrs later and handed me a husky 450 to look over real quick.

He said him and his brother was cutting wood all evening after the stihl 031 purchase.  His bro was using the 450 and is a stihl guy I guess. He turned to his bro with the 031 and said.  I will give you this husky 450 and your money  back on the 031.  Well being the guy with the 031 is a husky guy it was a no brainer.

Man why couldnt I have had his bro come in and offer me just a straight up trade. I would have done that without the money.

Some have all the luck.

So I guess I should get my finger out and fix up my 031av.  Needs crankcase replaced.  The replacement I picked up has a crank and piston so should be too difficult unless I will need odd Stihl tools.  HaHa!

So getting on with the crankcase swap and then find that my oil pump won't fit the good crankcase.  Not sure if my oil pump is newer or older than the one I need but won't fit for sure.  The part# I need is 1113-640-3201 apparently from later models.
Also struggling to get the flywheel off.  Both pistons look good but I suppose I should stick with the matched piston and cylinder.

Regards,

Lee

Friends stihl 031 in for a check over and some chains to do.  He said he bought it new around 1979

Dang saw surprises me ever time it comes back. Still starts easy and purrs like they all should.
I do have a small bit of bad news for him. But easy fix. Broken top right AV mount.

The stihl 031 box is just a pic to save.
