husky 55 question

Ok so I have owned this 55 rancher since new in 2000, and it just bever ran raight, been back to Hunsy dealers(4 different dealers), one even gave it back to me while under warrenty, saying, they don't know whats wrong with it, but they gave up
it goes from running great to like crap at will
tied new carb, intke, plugs, gas, oil's(pre mix different brands and ratio's)
days it runs good, its a great saw, BUt on same days it can go from running good one minute to crap in seconds,a nd back and forth
NO dealer has yet to figure it out
and I been living with it
as not sure what to do

well was out last week with it, 80 degree's and Humid as hell

first 20 minutes of running, it was like a great saw, no bogging down, start one pull,
then it just started to load up under a load, would rev high and as soon as the chain hit wood, rpm's would drop, and it would hold a steady low RPM, and cut, but at like 1/4 throttle, even holding wide open,
back off wood, and back to full RPM"s
pulled plug, all looks good as it should
let it sit for 30+ minutes, fires right up and cuts 2 logs up fine, then again, no power
waited another 30 minutes and still no go
, so left it go for the day, next day same temps, dumped the fuel, and added new Fresh fuel and still loading up, added a new plug just for??
 still no go
parked it, till today, went out started on first pull, and cut like a new saw?

so, what could be the issue's
is it just a lemon of a saw, or is there something that can be done to get it to run good all the time??
I am no engine builder, but have tinkered some over the yrs, and I am at a loss on what things could be, and my dealers near me, I think have given up, and I cannot see investing anymore $$ into the saw, as warrenty is long gone
I did contact Husky about it, and sadly they were Zero help, other than to tell me to keep trying different dealers
figured they would have been upset, and or willing to help a little more, when I told them one of there dealers told me they didn't know what was wrong with it or that they even wanted to work on it, as thought that was a contract deal of being a Husky dealer, they had to work on the saw's
as it wasn't because they didn't like me, we are on good terms, they just didn't know what else to do to it?
 thanks
its NOT my only saw, but would like to get it to run if possible, as why have a broken saw right?

OH forgot, ignition wires and plug wires were all replaced too twice!
 at the dealers under warrenty

Here are a couple of things

55s have a rubber grommet that acts as a seal on the pulse tube that is moulded into the carb plate and they use a rubber tube between the carb plate and the intake spigot on the cylinder. If either of these are leaking then the saw will not run right.

You mention that you have changed or rebuilt the card several times, it is possible that the self tapping screws that hold the carb to the carb plate have stripped out the carb plate holes and you have an air leak where the carb meets the carb plate.

Does this behavior apple only when the saw gets hot? Because erratic running on a hot saw is caused by a failing coil. Marginal Coils tend to fail when they get hot.

I was also thinking impulse area on the intake , plus the rubber intake.  Then coil.

thanks, and  the intake and all tubes were replaced a while back, trying to solve the running issue
and the last Husky shop did dtrip out the one carb screw, s when I opened it up there was only one dam screw holding it all on ??
jerk never even tried to put one back in
, i put some JB plastic weld in , and its been holding rock silid, but guess it could leak ??, but its on again solid right now with my fix
 and No
the saw runs funny both hot and cold

I do know all electrinic parts were replaced at one time trying to solve it,. and it never made a difference, as they thought maybe it was a bad ignition, then coil the plug wire
then they went back to another carb, and then a second intake and tubes
and it ran the same off and on, never seeming to make a difference that would last more than a few tanks of gas
seeemd liek once it was toyed with, it would run for a few times, then start all over with same issue's
 loosing power for unknown reasons
every dealer it went to(I tried different dealers due to fustrations, and well, they kinda gave up trying to solve it too)

all figured it was a carb isue, and would try different settings, but always went back to this running issue after a tank or two of gas was run thru it
you's get it back, and think OK its good now, and then take it out when you needed it, and it wouldn't run after 20-30 inutes of use, or NOT at all
every time is a suprise as to if it will be good or crap!
and worse yet, it can be good one minute, and then next cut use;ess
always fun when you far from the truck LOl
almost smashed it a few times , and shot it once  being pissed off at it LOL

its again not my only sw now, had to buy another due to it being like it is, but sucks, from all I heard before I bought it, it was supposed to eb a good saw?
sad part is , at this point what I spent on it to date I could have bought a new saw already ??
but that determination to make it run gets to me I guess!

You should see to it that there is no leak any were..

It could be carb mount that is acting up..

What carb is in it now?
Settings are on the needles?

There has to be an air leak somewhere! Did any of the dealers do a vaccum/pressure test on the saw? If you do not know are you able to perform these two tests?

as for what carb is on it now, HUMM< its a carb a husky dealer put on it last summer, , should be an OEM carb, but not possitive on what one, as I know for this model there are a couple listed
and as for needle settings, I have no idea on that
and as for testing for an ar leak
what would I need to do that
I am sure one of the many dealers must have, as I know they did pressure tests to it, and always said it was well in spec there, but as for vaccumn test?? again not 100 % sure but believe they did
carb screws are tight tight right now, and a new gasket was put on last time it was off, not that one cannot go bad

today I gave it one more go
cut down two tree's about 12-15 inch dia, and it ran well, Till I turned it on its side, bar adj screw side facing the ground, to get a few branches off, and it right away started to run crappy, would not rev up, and as soon as the rpms were up, and the chain hit wood, it would die down, and not rev up any more

I shut it off, let it sit till I cleaned up the tree's I had cut, about 10-20 min
 and fired it back up
always starts on 1-2 pulls
 and ran well again
so why would turning it on its side cause this
had 3/4's of a tank of fuel

The seal/bearing on the flywheel side is bad?

Carb screws (H/L) should not be down tight! You should get a small screw driver and slowly turn the (h/l) closed, just very lightly do not go nuts, just seat the adjustments closed. Then open each (counterclockwise)1.25 turns. Then start the saw and let us know the results.

OK I have done that, I can get it to run very solid hot and cold, full throttle and off, no bogs or anything
but then use saw and again running great one cut, pull out start a new cut and it goes crappy
shut it off some times, wait a little and it will work great, some times not
and today it went crappy as soon as I turned it on its side to cut, bar side screws towards the ground

OK, when you turn it on its side and it goes bad. Set it down and open the fuel cap then put the cap back on and start the saw. If it goes great then does it again, open the cap again and see if it starts and runs great. If so your problem is a clogged fuel/tank vent.

Thanks, last shop to have saw in Jan, replaced that vent, anda new cap
as it was pissing gas out the vent when the saw sat for more than 10 minutes with ANY gas in it, it was like it was under pressure, and almost squirting it out
 BUT saw ran good LOL
got saw back,  no more leaking gas, and ran good for first few times of use, then it sat from about late Feb, till a few days ago more or less
never leaked gas, but now this running issue again
I will try the cap off on and see
guess maybe its a vaccum lock tye deal your thinking if its not breathing right

OK, it seems that you are getting the same information from this and the other site.

When the saw runs 'crappy', does it appear to be a lack of fuel or an electrical issue? I have just fixed an MS260 that was doing the same thing, it turned out to be a **** plug wire that would intermittently ground out on the cylinder.

I noticed that Dan Henry offered to look at your saw, perhaps you should consider letting Dan have a look.

Sounds to me like a tank vent issue. Builds up to much pressure to pull fuel right. Let it sit and the pressure slowly bleeds off. Then it runs ok, till it builds more pressure.  Just a thought. Have you checked the compression?

well just to add an update
today I had the saw out, was in low 70's all day here
cut down and up 3 bigger hemlocks, about 300 dam branches per tree LOl
and then into smaller pieces , as I stacked them to burn, on a safe day, or come winter when there is a lot of snow to prevent a forest fire !
and the saw ran flawless all day??
so didn't get to try any of the things to see if they made a difference(like if its vapor locking or)
NOW I know I am not crazy, as this saw runs good some days, and then others like crap
but today I couldn't get it to skip a beat
which makes finding the issue's/problem even harder
and even worse why I have kept it as long as I did, hard to be mad when it works LOl

will try again in a few days
I know last time it acted up it was in the mid 80's
NOT that I think its temp matters, as it has acted up on me in colder temps as well as hotter, its just you never know what its going to do when you take it out, that is fustrating
but will keep updated as I go
and Dan, thanks again, and if I cannot figure it out I would still like to drop it off with you then!
