My buddy stopped by, knowing i like McCulloch's, brought me this very big saw. Can someone tell me what i have? I'm thinking 797 or 795? ???
-
I would say it should be numbered on the underside of the stuffer .
-
Yes. thanks Al. It is a 740. ;D
-
Your welcome man. ;D ;D

Holy crap 23.5 lbs. I told you it wore me out to carry it across the parking lot. :o
-
Now to get it running. It runs with a prime. But wont suck fuel. :-\
Holy crap 23.5 lbs. I told you it wore me out to carry it across the parking lot. :o
Could you imagine lugging that thing around all day. Every day. Like they used to? :o
-
Well you have to remember these weren't used as firewood saws .Once you get them in the cut that weight actually helps you . Hook the dogs and give it the gas, the saw does does the rest .
-
I pulled the carb. It was full of snot. Cleaned it. Reinstalled it. It runs and idles. I cant seem to get the carb adjusted though.
-
Can you get me close with the H and L screws Al? One minute it runs rich and another minute its lean. I was told it ran, the last it was used. When i got it, the L screw was out 1 1/2 turns and the H was out 1/4 turn.
-
Oh Lawdy I looked it up and that thing has a flat back on it . :( That being the case most likely the diaphragm is puckered where it won't flex enough to get enough fuel in it and runs out lean .
You could try soaking the diaphragm in brake fluid a couple days to soften it up .You might also set the fuel lever a tad high which might help it or it might flood it out .
I don't know if that guy from Sugar Creek supply has the flat back kiits or not .At any rate your'e just going to have to fiddle with it if you don't find a kit . I have a 250 with a flat back I must have had apart a half dozen times before I got it right . This BTW is my least favorite chainsaw carb .
-
Ok. Thanks Al.
-
Sounds like your a mouse Man of Stihl one day you will understand ............ real men use these as pencil sharpers

I could never ever figure out why in the world they ever used a freaken flatback . They already had the good old Tillotson model HL .In fact after they dropped the flaty they went back to using it again .
-
That saw is on the back burner for the moment. My 250 also has the flatback. But its much smaller. I havn't had to mess with it yet. Knock on wood.
-
Hmm,didn't know that . I kind of figured the flateys were all the same size .
-
Here are the two side by side. (http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g457/rjcfritz/sawpics045.jpg)
-
Unless my eyes are deceiving me the 250 is sporting an HL Tilley .After I do some work later on today I'll snap a pic of a 250 with a flatty and with an HL .
-
Lawdy I had to move about twenty saws to find these things .The Tilley HL 63 is on the left ,the fatty on the right .
-
Ok. I was assuming they were both called flatbacks. I guess ya learn something new every day. ;D
-
Hey Al can these carbs be interchanged or switched, what I mean is can I dump a flatty out and drop a tilley in it's place
-
Yes and no .They interchange but the flat back only has a thumb type primer button where as it's a lock down choke button on the Tillotson .Also the throttle linkage is probabley a tad different between the two .If you are changing one to another from two complete saws it shouldn't be a problem because all the stuff should be there .
Now some of them like the 44 series that used levers instead of buttons I'm not exactly certain of what it would take .Nothing that couldn't be figured out though most likely .
-
Thanks Al :)
-
No their not both Flatbacks one i think has the round shaped housing for the fuel pump and diaphram the other a squarer type housing with a primer both carb types are OK providing you know what your doing.
The flatback has the square type of housing

??? I couldn't imagine packing that saw into the woods!!???? I would have two helpers. One to carry fuel, water, oil, & tools. The other to carry the saw! They could take turns- not to tire themselves out!!! :o LOL. Thanks!
