Title: Porting for a Husqvarna 262XP?
Post by: KilliansRedLeo on November 07, 2013, 11:00:57 am
Got a very nice one-owner 262XP off a guy in Missouri, should be here next week. Saw runs but has a problem with choke and throttle linkage. Those are no big deal as I have OEM replacement parts on hand. I own several of these saws but have never felt that a port job was necessary as they run very well out of the box.

Just wondering what others thought about porting options for the 262XP?

Every saw needs ported :)
They are pretty much max from the factory.  You can widen the intake and ex. a little and set squish.  That's all I do to mine (down to 5 261/262 conversions).  Hard to improve on a factory hot rod. ;D  Biggest thing is a bigger carb HDA87 NLA is 16.06 venturi  IIRC.  The bigger carb really helps them.

Thanks Bill that is pretty much my thoughts as well. I will put up some pictures when it arrives.

A HDA-87 would be the way to go if I had one. Should you come across one that you don't need for yourself, PM me I will buy it off you! ::)

IIRC the HDA 87 was replaced by the HDA 120/120-1. Does anyone know what the specs changes were  between the 87 and 120?

I've been looking for one for several years with no luck.  But if I do you will be first in line.   I've thought about a HDA 137 or 164 16.66 venturi from Poulan 330-3750 change shafts if needed but these carbs use a impulse line from top of carb to impulse barb in the crankcase.  You could drill crankcase and install impulse port.  If I can get caught up I may try it on the last 261 I picked up.  I'll have it apart anyway.

120 is 15.08 same as 144 IIRC.

As I remember it, it was quite early - likely around 1991.

The venturi went down from 16.67mm to 15.08mm, which is a lot.

I don't know how much it is possible to open the venturi of a HDA-120, but I do know that it isn't just a question of boring it out - you need to know exactly what you do!

Walbro list a HDA-87 with a16.66mm Venturi, and a 120 and 144 both with a 15.08mm Venturi. Would a carb from a 268 or 272 work for what you guys are looking for. That should be a Tillotson HS-260A, it has a Venturi of 17.46mm

HS260 has canted mounting screws, HDA is level you would have to make an intake block and linkage problems.

Just put a had-87 on my 261. It had a had-144. pulls better than it did.

The 562XP is pretty much already ported.

562xp/2260 are awesome stock. but when ported, they become not for sale,no you cant borrow it,dont touch it . I have customers that trade saws like changing underwear. once they get there 562xp/2260 ported it suddenly becomes the saw that's never going to be sold, that always finds its way into the truck for a firewood trip and is just a permanent staple in there saw line up. why didn't they come out years ago?

I supect it is easiest to stay with HDA as well, but believe it should be possible to take the venturi of the 120 and 144 at least out to the same effective diameter as the 87 - provided you know how to do it?
