Title: Husqvarna 261/262 Muffler bracket
Post by: KilliansRedLeo on December 14, 2013, 03:16:45 pm
Have a look at the muffler bracket on the attached photo of a 261. I am looking for some of these but cannot figure out what the part number is or any reference to it.

If anyone knows or can give me the part number I would appreciate it.

This is a factory bracket not a modification.

Did some more looking and it appears that it is off 1999-06 261 EPA I believe the part number would be 503 50 86-03
And the spark screen is 537 01 08-01  Complete muffler is 503 97 25-02 all the parts and complete unit appear still to be available.

The reason for all this is that is looks to me like the factory put a very mild DP muffler on a stock saw.

I remember finding some brackets a few years ago used at chainsawr.

Checked Chainsawr and no go.

So it appears to me that if one were to use the 261EPA bracket and screen on the 262XP muffler (which is open behind the bracket) you could get dual ports without modifying anything. The opening in the 261EPA is not huge but could be enlarged without too much trouble.

I'll shoot some photos of my 262 with that 261 muffler.
Also the 261 muffler is running a deflector with a 5/8" hole behind it as part of the mod.

I also have a nos 261 muffler that may have a part number on the bracket.

I'll look @ my 261's I know one of them has that support.  You're right 1999 261 PN's are right for cover @ screen.  If one of them has it I'll remove it and send it to you.  I have some NOS supports to replace it with the reg. ones.  It is a mild DP.

Just figured out that the little vent in the front of the 261 bracket can easily be opened up into an oval shape such that a tube can be fit and welded from back. I have a supply of old bicycle frame tubing that I will use. Bicycles have all sorts of useful curves that make doing MMs easy. They can be had for cheap at a scrap yard.

It turns out that I have just the standard 261 muffler and bracket.

Here is the muffler mod that is on my 262xp.

That is pretty slick! Did you use a 266 outlet?

I bought the saw this way off CL in Seattle.

Looks like a 266 port.

I like that Jack.

Seen a 088 done the same way at a GTG.

Also going to try something new when I do this one. Mufflers tend to rust from heat and condensation. The muffler is not really a problem but the socket head looong metric allen screws that Husqvarna uses tend to accumulate rust in the socket heads. Sometimes to the point that the internal heads will no longer provide enough purchase for the tools to reliably remove the bolts.

I have some new Husky bolts for the 261/262 mufflers that I measured and found that McMaster/Carr carries the same size screw in stainless steel. Not cheap but cheap enough when compared to messing about trying to get stripped head bolts out.

I routinely use a little never-seize on the threads to keep away corrosion.

Sometimes, stainless is softer than the old steel bolts. Stainless is very tough but often softer than the socket screws. Never seize will be your friend.

+1 on the Never Sieze have a can I've been using out of for 40 years.  I use it for me I might be the next one to work on it. ;D.

Agree, MickeyMaster has the SS screws which they say meet the same ISO standard a the Husqvarna black oxide coated screws. However if I cannot confirm that I will be using factory screws.

There is a service bulletin regarding that front bracket in Post #1. The 261 came out with a very restricted muffler and this bracket with that small additional port was an attempt to address it. Kid of lame really. The other pic with the 266 or 288 deflector is a way better solution.

Thanks, I think the bracket is off a 266 since it is flat, but it could be the reverse bracket used on the 288.

I have also seen them with one of the ears turned down, I think it would be the right side when viewed from the front of the deflector.

The one pictured is the way I plan to go.

I use those different brackets on a lot of saws. Gives the muff mods a little more of a factory look. The smaller deflector from the 55 and 254 mufflers fits in a lot of applications where the 266 or 268 piece would be too large. This pic might come out sideways, but you can see the different options and I've included the part numbers.

Nice illustration Spike - and I believe I have seen that picture before?  ;)

I believe the 288 one is the one most commonly used for muffler mods?

I believe that if you look closely at this picture you will see that the way the mod is done would require 1) a  flat outlet and one whose mounting holes correspond to the spacing of the muffler bolts. Which would probably be the 288 outlet but from Spike60s' picture it looks like the 288 version is turned down on the right edge and 262 is flat but has those teeth which I suppose could be ground off. 2

I think they used the 262 outlet and ground off the teeth. Perhaps Spike60 could confirn which outlets are flat.

Well by 660magnum's picture it appears that it must be the 262 version because it is the inly one that ppears to be flat. The muffler brackets' front surface where the outlet is flat.

It appears that the 257/262 outlet is the only one that comes close for use on a 262 front plate. However 503 54 54-01 is only available as a Poulan or Electrolux part 18$ each...ouch! 18$ is not a problem I guess but what is a problem is not knowing the spacing of the holes in the plate, because they must match the spacing of the bolt holes in the mounting plate, if one were to duplicate the one pictured earlier in this thread.

Anyone got one on hand they could measure?

The 288 outlet may also work but it appears that the mounting surface is not flat, anyone have one to look at and measure?

288 goes flat easily by just using pliers.  I have the 266 ones too. Same thing, they all go flat easily.

flat for a 084 DP cover I did.
