Title: Poulan 295 4620 Oiler Problem
Post by: johnhenryrolf on December 13, 2013, 12:21:54 am
First post here, but the small steel cam gets driven from the shaft by the
"crush" when you tighten the clutch assembly down against the cam, or in
other words it is stacked in there like a washer being pressed against the
crankshaft journal.

What a great engineering design, with the brass gear reducer cammed in a
roughly a 19 to 1 ratio.  There are 19 teeth on the brass driver, and 20
teeth in the stator. Note that one of the gear tooth pockets on the outer
gear is always empty. The face of the brass driver gear has a short cam
cast into it too, that the cross piece button rides on.

One turn is made to stroke the plunger for every 19 rotations of the engine, or
about 5 short plunger strokes per second at 6000 RPM.  Looks like the designer
must have played with his kids Spirograph drawing set back in the 70's, if you
remember those.

Anyway, you probably have a quad ring rubber seal that is simply worn
out, it goes around the plunger pin that is actuated by the cross shaped
piece that is driven by the face of the brass gear.  You have to dig it out of
the bore with a dental pick, at least most of the time you do.
Hello, and welcome hotshot...I don't suppose you know anything about the oilers on the PP295, 4620AVL's  do you?  I own a 295 that runs/oils great, and I bought a 4620 that runs great, but does not oil to save it's "you know what" anyway, just looking for some more insight (I've replaced the oil pump with no luck), thanks, John.

I believe once you remove the oiler on those that there is a small rubber tube that runs into the oil tank.   You can just pull it out and make sure it is not plugged up.   The only other thing to look at is the worm gear and make sure it is engaging the oil pump correctly.

Thanks, do you have any experience with this model of saw?  I will look at the worm gear on the crank, but it seems like I have tried just about everything there is to think of to get my problem fixed.  I have flushed the system with diesel, but it won't even pump that.  It's almost like the system is getting vapor locked or something, but I'm sure that it isn't vented in any way, am I right?  Thanks again.

I have 3 of the Poulan 295's.

Yes there is a tank vent for the oil tank.   It will not draw oil unless it is vented.

The other thing I have done is this.    At the end of the oil pump is a small hole.   You should be able to rotate the pump by hand and see a small piece inside move past the hole.   This will at least tell you if the pump is being turned by the worm gear.  Remove spark plug first.

It has been awhile since I worked on mine so I hope I remembered right.

Any idea where the vent is for the tank?  It doesn't appear that the cap has a vent in it.  Just wondering, this is baffling the @^#$ out of me!

If you have the two piece rubber pick up that the oil pump fits into that's likely your problem.
The rubber swells and the pump will sit at an angle and not seal causing it to suck air.

On the IPL they would be these two parts

40. 530019174 Seal--Oil
41. 530037057 Pickup--Oil

To correct the problem Poulan produced a one piece pick up to replace the two piece unit.
It will set you back less than $2.00
The part number of the one piece unit is.
545047801

Gentlemen I split this topic off from the 306A oiler thread.  This topic serves everybody better as its own thread.  Lots of good info to help folks with the PP295/4620 series saws.

Thanks to all that contributed here, including the gentleman who posed the first PP4620 question.

I have a PP295 on the way, and am glad to see the oiler info for that series here in case I need it.  Thanks Tim for the part #'s.

I have repaired a few of those and most of them it seems that 530037057 (oil pick up hose) will split outside the case and the oiler will not pump. This also causes the saw to drip oil and drain the tank.....Had very few problems with the pump itself and most of the problems with the tube....

Yeah, my saw has definitely left a mess everywhere before, until I started flipping it over to store it...I guess now I have a better idea what to do about it.  Thanks again.

Well pizz. Seen air bubbles oiling. Not oiling worth a chit.

Seems to be common on these. Remembered this old thread with info.

Comparing the newer 2005 295 to the 1994 2700. Some difference in way things made and held down.

This like new one had the air bubbles syndrome. I tried the common fixes. Did not work.

So I started comparing the older 2700 one. Mixing in some of its parts to the newer one.  Using also the metal outer part of the pump with newer innards.

Bingo oils like she should be now.

Pics to go with above.

Put some of the older stuff into the newer. 94 to 05. Newer isnt always better.
