So this was in pretty bad shape and the metal very thin. I can see why it **** if not careful.
This is a before pic.

Here is the after. Solo Rex clutch cover.
-
Amazing. That cover was a mess in the beginning.
By the way I was on the phone for a couple hours the other day shooting the chit.
I was telling IMO the best production chainsaw hotsaw builder in the United States about what you can do with magnesium. He sounded very impressed over the phone.

Thanks for the compliment.
Yes the clutch cover was pretty bad and tried my patients a couple of times. I welded it from the back side also and left a little extra weld there to help it from cracking again. The magnesium was very thin.

Hey Roger, did you weld up that clutch cover from the 268/72 that had a bow bar on it yet?
-
No not yet. I need to remove the brake from it first and have not got around to it. It is on the list.
-
Really nice work Roger
-
Thanks Tim

It is nice how you were able to save that broken up cover. I would have considered it not repairable?

The person who had it just wanted it welded to make it functional again but I like to try and get them to some original state.
I actually could have done more.
-
Well, you got the job done.
I realize it was a customer item and and you have to draw the line somewhere but you certainly went above and beyond basic functionality.
-
im curious how you cleaned the cover? any thoughts on chemically cleaning with chromic acid or other to minimize the weld contamination?

Not really a customer. I have never charged for any of the chainsaw welding jobs I have done so far.
Let's just say I like taking something broken and making it functional again. I get some satisfaction in that.
All of the jobs so far have come from guys on the different forums and have been done free of charge and they just pay for shipping.

I sand blast the pieces before welding. It will get into and cracks or breaks.
I have never tried to chemically clean a piece. The sand blasting works pretty good and contamination problems have been minimal.
