They list those generic coils on flea bay that are supposed to fit a lot of Stihl models.Weather they actually do I have no clue . In that list was 024,029, 034 .048 and several others .I might have an 029 coil in the shed .If I do and when I find the time I'll see if it would fit .If it would fit I'd guess it would not self advance like the OEM SEM coil on the 048.I think the OEM has three field piece coil lamenations  as opposed to two on a regular coil .

Lots of ignition & flywheel changes in those saws.....

Any idea what system you have??.....The most common one I come across on the 048 is the one with the donut trigger under the flywheel.

That's a Bosc system .

See the problem is several fold .They list 4 different numbers on the flywheel ,The SEM system which is self advancing .The Bosc which has the solid state trigger device plus a points ignition system .That I assume to be Bosc .

Well this is what I have right now.  I replaced the SEM coil with one of the above mentioned generic coils and I do have spark.  Not sure if it's correct spark but it's spark none the less.  I see 2 flywheels listed and 3 coils listed in the IPL.  The IPL shows points but doesn't not list a coil to be used with points.  It shows coil part number 0000 400 1300 (the non SEM coil) but does not show a trigger for this coil.  If I were any more confused I would throw this saw in the river.

I will also add that I tried a coil from an 028 and it did not work.  I had to modify the hell out of the mounting holes in the coil to get it far enough away from the fly wheel to let it tun and it never made spark.  It has a 3 field lamination just like the factory SEM coil in the 048 but I would guess the 028 coil is for a smaller flywheel.  With the gap set correctly the very ends of the outside fields were correct gap but the middle field was way to far away.  The generic coil only has 2 field lamination's. and it fit perfectly and makes spark.

I can only assume then that the laminations of the coil align pretty much with the flywheel magnets .If that be the case and the mounting is pretty much in line with the original SEM coil  then it should work .If it's off just an RCH then you might get it by filing the key .It should be around 27-28 degrees advanced.

Now the deal with the advancing coil I'm not real certain if that's all that important anyway .If it kicks back on you just hang a 6 dollar D-handle on  it .

My baby ,the 038 Mag will come back on you like a mule if you patty cake with it .Pull that SOB like you mean it .

I've got the OEM STIHL D handle. I put it on my 10mm 044 GTG toy and I'm not crazy about it.
Phil, you can have it if you want it?
It'll just add to your storage fees ;)

I've got a couple those handles. They do what they are supposed to do.

Yes, the garbage can didn't weigh much to place it over in the shade with bright sun all around to give the 066 a lighted from all directions effect.

That is a really nice garbage can.  The lamanation's on the aftermarket coil line up exactly the same as the ones on the SEM coil.  Difference being the lower lamination is not present on the aftermarket coil.  As far as the recoil handle goes.....if the SP125 doesn't need a d handle than neither dies this baby 048.  I can't wait to get the carb kit so I can see if this thing actually runs.

i think you can use the 0000 400 1300 ignition module.
