The Dolmar 421 is a excellent chainsaw. It is 42cc and normally has a 16" bar with 3/8" low profile chain. It is sort of a hot rod for it is the largest displacement of that particular Dolmar chainsaw family.

$306 is a good price for that saw but the dealer is probably wanting you to give him your MS250?

he hasn't said but I wont give it up, I plan on tearing it apart in the meantime and trying to rebuild myself.

Good information thanks! So you think it would be a good saw? I mostly use it around the ranch cutting fire wood and clearing brush.

The Dolmar 421 is slightly smaller than your MS250 but it has good power and weighs less. You will like it to carry on the four wheeler and knock off a couple low hanging limbs on occasion.

It is the closest thing he has to your MS250

I believe the 421 is rated about the same power as the 250, but is built much better. With the 63ps chains on it, I believe you  will like it.

Just got one.  Haven't run it yet tho.  Pro built, magnesium crankcase.  Everybody I know that has one highly recommends it.  Did a MM on it the day after I got it.  I think I posted how to do a muffler mod the easy way not how I did it.  Took me about 2 1/2 hrs.  can be done in 30 min or less.  If I didn't post it I will.

Not quite sure what you are talking about. The next size up is the 510 and 5105.

The 510 models(Farmer/SemiPro) are a little older design with a aluminium crank case. Very good quality, good power but heavier. I expect them to disappear from the line up quite soon. Power wise similar to a Stihl 270/271 or Husqvarna 450 but as mentioned above split metal crank case which many consider a definate plus.

The 5105 models(Pro) are the top of the line of the 50cc from Dolmar. A real strong bastard that will let you forget a lot of other in its class. Classic two stroke and has a easy start mechanism. Power wise very similar to the Stihl 261 or Husqvarna 346xp/550.

About the 420/421(updated version with 3hp compared to the 420 with only 2.7hp) it is one of the great saws on the market in my eyes! It only has 42cc but this little fellow always wants to play with the bigger boys! And it sure cut's that way! I put it in the same category as the pro line form Stihl 241 and Husqvarna 543 at 1/3 to 1/2 of the money! I run mine(420) in 325/1.3mm 14inch bar set up with a full chisel Stihl chain and it just rips! Noodling? It loves noodling! I also have a 5000 (predecessor to the 5105) and it is staying more and more at home.

I see the best setup for a homeowner/small grade farmer in a 40&60cc combo. And on that list would definately be the 421 and the new Dolmar 6100!

I have a ps420 and like it. Not as fast cutting as my 346XP. I use both for felling and limbing. Switched the Dolmar to .325 chain and powermatch bar because the 3/8LP would break at he slightest pinch.

I tune it with a tach. Start way rich. Never checked how many turns out. Sorry.

If I didn't have a tach I would go to a dealer. Around here it costs beer money.

Tuned by me with a tach 12500 rpm holds in wood 8500-9000 rpm.The H jet is 3 turns out.
I use sthil hp ultra 40:1.
Is too rich?
Tuned by the dealer without a tach H jet 1 1/2 turns out and is hitting the rev limiter.
I think is too lean?
Thanks!

I'd go along with those thoughts.

Keep in mind that outside air temperature plays a big part in the apparent mixture setting. Colder - they go leaner
Warmer - they go richer

As far as I recall the max. rpm is 13500. So I would orientate my saw more in that direction.

660 magnum. With the dealer settings is hitting the rev limiter in the summer in the winter  lean!
7 sleeper At 13500 rpm is hitting the rev limiter .No 4 stoking or I can hear it.
At 12500 rpm for 6 months now I see no carbon build up on the exhaust side.
Could apear other problems with my setting?

I have some Dolmars set at 12500 and have not had any problem with carbon. They are rather fat on mixture when you start out but as the cylinder gets hot, they are fine in the cut.

You can not set a 13500 saw at 13500 as it will hit the limiter. 13000 is about as high as you can go with one.

This is how my dolmar act : fat at start but when its got hot fine in the cut!I will leave it with my setting.
Thanks again and sorry for the off topic!

Setting saws after specific RPM is not a way that works very well if you are out to get most out of your saw and have it many hrs.

I found a comparison that might actually work.
You don't choose amount of exercise by the pulse, you do it by performance.
You don't choose tires based on what speed limit you have, you get tires that work with what speed you wish to go.
You give it what it needs to perform its best in wood! Not the highest scream, fastest stop or biggest bang.

Just to clarify max rpm is 13500 it is not what I recommend. I have mine set at ~13200.

When I had my 7901 I was always adjusting during weather changes.  It get cool fatten it up rich to get it off the rev limited coil.  Get warm lean it back out some.  Just listen to your saw IMO it will tell you what it needs.
Not a one setting fits all type of deal IMO.
