I take it the first 4 digits of stihl part number represents the model of the saw? If so this nice info to know.
-
Correct
-
Whats the first 4 for the ms341? Would it be in same group as the 034, 036 and ms360?
-
The 360 is 1125.
Almost all the parts of the 340 are the same as the 360.
-
I'm guessing here but I would bet a 341 would be the same as 361 1135 being 341 same saw just a detuned version.
-
I believe you're right C4F, my 361 manual has the 341 model in it as well. I also think they're both on the IPL.
-
What about a 015?
-
What about a 015?
Its already posted in the first post. I am going to let you look at the list and find it yourself. ::) ;)
-
I found it now but not earlier when I looked.

Thanks man, glad to be here lots of knowledge.
Any saw you need. I put one on my dads poulan 3300 that was starting to hurt his hands with the 2 finger T handle they used.
I even added a rubber hose to extend them for cold start racing.

Bearing removal/install tools
1124 893 7200 for 084 088
1118 893 7200 for 028 024 026 034 036 044 046
1122 893 7200 for 064 066
1120 893 7200 for 044 046 009 010 011 012
1119 893 7200 for 038 066 064
These will also work on most of the pro husky saws as well. Used the 1119 893 7200 to put the crank bearings in my 394 case. Not as press mandrel like they are made but just as a holder for the bearing so I don't burn my fingers on the case. They are also fairly inexpensive.

Just copy and pasting info to save.
The year of the Stihl saws
In doubt you can ask with Stihl with the serial number and try to give an answer.
Sometimes you can read the sticker on the brake lever with "newer" saws.
Then, on the motorcycle and on plastic components at Stihl, so-called date clocks can be seen. In which year were they introduced? Outside the numbers on the watch from 1 to 12 describe the month of manufacture. The year of production is coded by letter:
Year of construction Character letter comment
1984 J It followed
1985 K And then continually up
...
1999 Z From
2000 A Then start again from the beginning. So
2001 B etc
-
Stihl serial numbers
140106838
264556052
Serial Numbers
„
The 1 at the beginning of the serial number indicates the unit was
manufactured in Germany
„
A 2 and 5 would indicate the unit was manufactured in the United States
„
A 3 represents Brazil
„
An 8 represents China
„
SG 20 hand operated sprayers start with a 9
The IPL may start a serial number reference with an “X” meaning to
disregard the first number.
Sometimes when looking up parts for an older unit, such as this 028 chain saw, a serial number will be referenced. If the reference starts with an X this means to disregard the first number of the serial number where it is stamped on the unit.
There may be a small “x” or a star stamped next to the serial number. These symbols indicate that the crankcase passed a vacuum/pressure test or some other inspection during the assembly process of the unit.
StihlDan - circled x's can sometimes indicate that the unit had either in factory updates done during the assembly process, or that it failed in a small part of it's in house test and then had "rework" done to it.
I'll try to get a real official answer in a week or so. My connection at STIHL is on vacation.

So
2001 B etc
Kevin, here's where I found the year code info you posted

first gen solenoid = Black - pn# 0000 120 5110 - should use with black fuel filter
current gen solenoid = White - pn# 0000 120 5104 - should use with orange fuel filter
new exploratory solenoid that apparently has now been scrapped = Green - pn# 0000 120 5111
orange fuel filter, white solenoid and new coils have 2yr warranty. After that it sounds like stihl will replace parts but you will have to pay labor.

MS241 - he didn't have any info on the 241 yet.
MS261 cm - replace black solenoid to white solenoid and black fuel filter to orange fuel filter. (they are coming out with a kit for this (contains white solenoid and orange fuel filter) Use "RESET" (90sec choke, 60 sec idle, 5 cuts). There are no gen3 control modules/coils thus you don't use "Calibration" (30-40sec choke, 20-30sec WOT, let off after it goes from max to scream back to max :D)
MS362 cm - same as 261 above.
MS462 cm - all 462s have gen3 control modules/coils, white solenoids, and orange fuel filters. So obviously stick to doing "Calibration" and replacing white solenoid and orange fuel filter with a white solenoid and orange fuel filter.
MS661 cm - little more complicated on the 661...
If control module/coil = 4700c 4700d 4700e(gen1) 4701a(gen2) - then must stick with black solenoid, black fuel filter, and doing the "RESET" (90 sec choke, 60sec idle, 5 cuts). You should not inter change any of the parts ...apparently problems with doing so. For example a white solenoid with 4701a coil and black fuel filter.
If control module/coil = 4702 4703 4704(gen3) - then must stick with white solenoid and orange fuel filter. And of course you do a "Calibration" not a "RESET".
There is a kit specifically for the 661 which includes the ver3 coil, white solenoid, and orange fuel filter 1144 007 1801

@Cut4fun
What I will do is upload what I have to my Google drive and post the link here.
I dont think the contents of that page whose link posted is the same.
Mine are grabs from the pdf file on the old El. Catalog cd.
The contents of the link is more of a 'compilation' from different charts, hence more detailed.

OK, This is the link to a folder on my Google drive. I have uploaded what I had right now. Will add more later in the days to come. Some of the uploads may not be too great, so bear with me.

Stihl solenoid info again
Rule 1. Get rid of the black solenoids (Staiger 1). They have a high failure rate due to having a metal on plastic internal sealing surface. That combined with the old white filters (50 micron) caused major issues 10 years ago. Use orange filters in anything! (5 micron)
White solenoids (Zama) by far have the lowest failure rate as they use a metallic cup and seat to meter fuel. They also have the least amount of moving parts (3 compared to 5 in the Staiger)
Green solenoids (Staiger 2) were never made to be the replacement for black solenoids. They have a plastic on plastic sealing surface and will tolerate 30% nitro. They only are really meant for certain Early 261s, 201s , 362s and 441s that couldn't be updated easily with just a solenoid and filter. That doesn't mean a green solenoid won't work I have a few personal 661s that run green ones as I want to utilize the original 4700 controller.
For the people that don't like white solenoids need to realize that it's still a regular carburetor below that. That solenoid will only supply what fuel it is given from the metering side diaphragm. I had three 462s made in 2018 (153 hours) that I figured the solenoid were bad based on the fuel trims. It turns out the metering diaphragms were so hard from E10 that it was causing extremely poor running characteristics (NOT enough fuel) . Stihl now has OEM diaphragms available for around 10 bucks. I did diaphragms and a solenoid and they are back in the field. Stick with the white ones.

Seen this on the stihl website. Seems M destination has changed from the old post with pic from 2013.
Each Stihl chainsaw model number ends in a combination of letters, each of which stands for a specific feature for performance:
B: Quick chain adjuster, a tool-less chain adjustment.
C: Comfort, for ergonomic and lightweight designs.
E: Easy2Start, making this Stihl Chainsaw easy to start up.
M: M-Tronic, engine management system that adjusts to varying conditions such as temperature.
Q: Quickstop, braking feature.
R: Wrap handle, multiple position handle for different uses.
