Lets see what I got into now.

Alan, from the picture this saw does look pretty good! You re going to need another of those $25 HD air filter covers though. Although, if you are going to put a 395 BB kit on it you will be replacing the better part of the intake tract, so you might want to think about going with the non-HD setup and save yourself a couple $.

Saws a basket case, stripped holes here and there, missing screws, case is **** in a hole for starter mounting, starter pawls screwed, starter pulley screwed, throttle is missing sprig and safety and two steel pins, cable is shot, buffer springs broke, air conductor ****, case **** by oil tank. Piston is done, jug could be salvaged need be, Intake bracket in 5 pieces I need a beer

Tim, what air filter do I need for the BB kit?

Look at the kit from HLS. All the pare numbers shown are correct.

Look here for the part numbers:

Tim, I ordered that kit from someplace else, hls does not have it in stock.   Was wondering on what air filter you were talking about

Wasn't talking about the filter itself, but the plastic cover for it.

Wow, what a mess! Let me look round in a box of scrap cases I have perhaps there is something there that will make your job easier! Otherwise, I see you doing a tutorial on how to weld up cases and drill and tap holes LOL!

Were the other two saws in such bad shape? I have a 576 non-AT here that I have to do a top end on for the same guy, wondering how bad of shape it is in. Have not yet opened the box.

The others were on the same shape.  The poor packaging and ripped open box and missing parts cost me over. $ 100 to replace. When heavy items are shipped, they must be packaged well enough to withstand being dropped, thrown,,,

I've got clean 395 side covers (pto & starter)  you can have for shipping. Adam

Any pics of the damaged areas?  Chances are I can probably weld them up and save the case.

What kind of rod do you use on these cases, I have a tig,  just never did magnesium.

Harris AZ92A rod.  Welder settings just like you would for AL.

Thanks, I meant to ask you if argon and ac was the ticket.

Can you weld al to the case?
Title: Re: 394 Rebuild and BB
Post by: srcarr52 on January 22, 2014, 02:48:50 pm
You could but you'll need an AL with a high mag alloying to make it work the best.  I'd just stick to filling it in.

Post by: alsled on January 22, 2014, 02:52:54 pm
As far as filling it in, there's parts missing here. Called the local weld shop on that rod. 125$ a pound, 10 lb minimum to order. I hate that place,,,,,,,

10 pounds of magnesium rod should be quite a few rods because it is so light weight?
Title: Re: 394 Rebuild and BB
Post by: alsled on January 22, 2014, 07:07:37 pm
What i did was burn the powder coat off a old 55 case, then I wire brushed it, then I cut it into strips, theres the filler rod.  Filled in a stripped hole, drilled and taped it, all good, theres 3 other cracks to take care of next.

Alan that is the coolest craftsmanship and most inventive technique I have seen in quite some time! +3!

Post by: alsled on January 22, 2014, 07:30:10 pm
Tim, if the real filler rod wasn't $125 a lb  I'd buy some at a decent price...  Did some research and 4043 al filler rod is said to work on mag, I may try it on a part of the 55 and see what happens.

Cool, I have a whole bunch of cases and cylinders that i was going o put in the scrap metal bin. Next time you are around you can have a look and any thing you think is worth fixing, you can have. In the future you will be doing ALL of my light metal welding!

Never throw that stuff out,, as soon as you do, you need it.

NO CHIT, but now I have someone (AlSled) that can repair it!

Post by: alsled on January 24, 2014, 07:35:59 pm
There are 3 areas that have cracks here, I cut a piece of a 55 case, the strip you see, and welded it on with other pieces of a 55, not pretty, but came out well in the end, the last pic is Sat. fix.  Its a work saw, not a show saw, so I'm happy.
I also find welding mag. easier then aluminum.

Tig depot sells az92 in 1/2 lb increments $60

4043 filler may work for filling small holes on a chainsaw case but the weld will be superficial. Az92a works well

I layed a weld with 4043 on the scrap 55, it broke right off.  Lol  I'll look into the place you posted.

Lol!  First time I bought the az92 filler the minimum was 5 lbs, kinda hard to swallow for occasional magnesium work.  The Tig Depot guy has some good "how to" vids. Knowledgeable guy

Just some pics, homemade welding filler from a scrap 55, that stuff does burn by itself,  theres one with cats on catnip for the hell of it.

That is a nice 394 case. Could be set up with a 395 setup easily since it's all missing.

No longer interested, purchased from that guy before, saw was not as advertised, 7777 never made good on his promise to supply a better saw. Was supposed to be a low hour 2007 372XPW.....Long story short is that it may have been low hour but was completely abused, worn out! I threw it in the scrap parts bin!

Al, on the paint, obviously sprayed. Do you have to or can bake it for a better more fuel proof finish?
Title: Re: 394 Rebuild and BB
Post by: alsled on January 26, 2014, 06:20:25 pm
Can't be baked, Its just acrylic enamal, fast dry.  If you want a more durable finish, base coat clear coat, or powder coat is the toughest.

I ran the BB hyway kit on my 394 finally. lets say I don't want to pick up my stock juged 394.  Rpm spools up like a lightning bolt, cuts faster and just plain old runs great.
