What are you guys using to close up your rails. I have one made by silvey. Works good. http://silveychaingrinder.com/bar-rail-closer

From my experience if I have a solid bar that has been used enough to gain from the rails being close up a little, these bars have a more prominent problem with the rails being worn out near the replaceable tip. I've considered shipping bars in this condition to SRCARR and he can weld them up and re-groove them for a lot less trouble than devising something myself to grind out the welded up groove.

I just don't have enough bad bars to warrant all these tools to repair a bar/year.

The simple technique to measure a solid body bar's rail spread is put a small straight edge against the side of the bar and the chains cutting edge working corner.
If there is no clearance between the straight edge and bar then it's time to tighten up the rails, and that means a chain filed down to the witness marks also.
I always hammer my bar rails on an anvil with a shim to tighten them up, also good for getting bends out . To get bends out of a laminated bar that the center shim is not broken [do a bend test in a bench vise] is to hammer the bar on an anvil but with a piece of belting between the bar an anvil.
Laminated bars rails can't be successfully tightened like a solid body bar can, they loosen up quick again with just a little use.

I like to file my cutters right down to the witness marks until the cutters break off so a on spec rail gap is important to me. Very important with a saw that fells trees, with the b/c laying on its side and the chain filed small the operator can't afford any extra gap.

I'll use a bar closer like that to over tighten a grove before welding any damage.  It's import to file or grind the bur off the side of the rails before using that tool or you'll get inconsistent results down the bar from running over the bur.

I over pinch them and then regrind the groove.  They last a little longer that way since the groove is straight and has the proper tolerance.  When you just pinch them down, the top edge will be tight but the bottom will still be loose.

What type of grinding machine do you use to re-grind the groove?  Adam

Just so you know Jim. I sent a guy to Bob's in Shelby not long ago. He no longer has his bar shop to redo bars or chains. Used to do a nice job on bars.  Guy said he sold out, wished I would have knew to see what he sold some stuff for.

That will work.  Here are some pictures.  First two are when I first built it, the last two where when I was grinding that 42" bar in the video.

That's sweet!!! Nice work! Thanks for the pics/vid.  What did you use for spindle bearings and is the diamond blade sized  to provide the finish groove dimension without adjustments to the cut?  Thanks.  Adam

Went back and watched the vid again! Really cool!

Very nice set up, where do you get the grinding wheels for the different gauges of chain?

I made a diamond dresser attachment so I can dress wheels down to any size I need.

Very cool, I can't remember who made the bar shop but when I talked to the lady out there she said she still has all the gauge grinding wheels in stock.

Seen some good barshop info here. Going to try and merge threads.
